Robert De Niro attended the closing ceremony to present the main award of Cannes, the prestigious Palme d'Or. He topbilled the satire What Just Happened?, directed by Barry Levinson, which was the closing film of the festival.

Direk Dante and Ferdy Lapuz of Ignatius Films Canada took this opportunity to Milla Jovovich, the Ukrainian-born American actress best known for starring in the film Resident Evil.

Direk Dante's film Serbis lost to the French film Entre Les Murs (The Class), which is directed by Laurent Cantet. Fortissimo Films has already sold the film Serbis to several countries such as Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg with Paradiso Entertainment, Singapore and Brunei with Cathay, Portugal with Lusomundo, Greece with Seven Films, Thailand with Sahamongkol Film International and in Israel with United King. Swift Productions' Equation will handle the French distribution and they have planned a fall opening already.
