This November, Repertory Philippines is staging Camp Rock: The Musical to punctuate its 2012 season.
Camp Rock: The Musical is based on the Disney channel’s popular made-for-TV movie Camp Rock, which kickstarted the careers of the Jonas brothers and Demi Lovato.
Rep’s version will be based on the second movie, where the original Camp Rock kids must battle another camp called Camp Star.
Veteran theater actor and director Audie Gemora is the director of this play. PEP.ph and other members of the press talked to Audie during the October 22 press launch held at Onstage Greenbelt 1, Makati City.
He said he chose to do this theater production because it is not that heavy.
“This musical is like cotton candy. Delightful, fluffy, seeet, melts in your mouth in a jiffy but leaves you feeling good after. I agreed to work on this lightweight musical because it’s my way of sowing into the next generation of musical theater actors,” said Direk Audie.
To get the perfect cast of 30 actors, Rep had to hold an open audition. Audie excitedly told the press that more than 300 young actors auditioned.
“We had to trim them to 30. It was so hard because everyone was talented,” he said.
During the press launch, everyone had the chance to see the talented young cast sing and dance to Camp Rock’s popular tunes.
Playing the lead role is TV5 actress Morissette Amon, who plays the role of Mitchie Torres. She must lead Camp Rock in its rivalry versus Camp Star.
Markki Stroem, meanwhile, plays Morissette’s love interest, Shane Gray. Shane is the lead singer of Connect 3, which stands for the Jonas brothers in the original movie. Markki's character also happens to be Mitchie’s boyfriend last summer.
Playing the other members of Connect 3 are Nacho Tambunting and Jef Flores, who are theater newbies.
Nacho is cast as Nate Gray--Shane’s shy brother who is the drummer of the trio. Meanwhile, Jef plays Jason Gray, the comical, easy-going guitarist of Connect 3. Jason is also Shane and Nate’s brother.
Cheska Ortega plays the role of Tess Tyler, the daughter of rock star T.J. Tyler, the diva of Camp Rock.
Justine Peña will play Dana Turner--a sweet young girl who is a terrific keyboardist and the daughter of the Camp Star owner.
Nel Gomez plays the role of Luke Williams--a big talent with an ego to match.
Other familiar faces in the cast are theater regulars Cara Barredo, Rem Zamora, and Hans Eckstein.
One other cast member caught the eye of the press. Playing part of the ensemble is a young girl named Erika Pangan, who is the daughter of rocker and theater actor Jett Pangan.
Erika is the only showbiz scion who made it past the auditions. Audie told the press that there were a few other auditioners who are sons and daughters of popular showbiz names, yet Erika is the only one who passed.
Camp Rock: The Musical will open on November 16, 2012 at Onstage Greenbelt 1, Makati City.
