Jon Jon Briones has earned a nomination in the 2015 Laurence Olivier Awards, considered as the U.K.’s most prestigious theater accolade.
In its official website, the Filipino actor was described as follows: "First-time nominee Jon Jon Briones is recognised for his charismatic performance as the seedy Engineer in Cameron Mackintosh’s legendary musical."
Incidentally, the 25th anniversary revival of Miss Saigon is also nominated this year for the Best Musical Revival category.
The Filipino thespian is one of four nominees in the Best Actor in a Musical category where he is competing against John Dagleish (Sunny Afternoon), Killian Donnelly (Memphis The Musical) and Brandon Victor Dixon (The Scottsboro Boys).
Lea Salonga commended Jon Jon for this achievement when she posted a photo of him with this caption:
"Dreams are still coming true for you, Kuya. Congratulations on your #OlivierAward nomination!!! @misssaigonuk @jonjonbriones"
They previously worked with each other in the original London production of Miss Saigon wherein Lea played the title character.
In 1990, Lea became the first Filipina to have won the Olivier Award for her portrayal of Kim in Miss Saigon.
This year's Olivier Awards also includes three nominations for Here Lies Love, a London production that featured Mark Bautista as Ferdinand Marcos. The rock musical about Imelda Marcos is competing in the categories Best New Musical, Sound Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music, and Best Theater Choreographer for Annie-B Parsons.
Nicole Scherzinger, vocalist for the Pussycat Dolls, is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress in a Musical category. The singer who was born to a Filipino father and Russian-Hawaiian mother was cited for her role in Cats.
The awarding ceremony of the Oliviers will take place at the Royal Opera House in London on April 12.
