Another Tony award-winning musical makes its way to the Philippines!

9 Works Theatrical and Globe Telecom team up to produce the Manila staging of the Broadway hit American Idiot, an album-slash-stage musical by American punk rock band Green Day.

A total of 9 shows will be held at the Globe Iconic Store at the Bonifacio High Street Amphitheater in Taguig City from June 24 to July 9, 2016.

The rock musical will be led by local rock stars including former Rivermaya members Jason Fernandez and Norby David, Wolfgang's vocalist Basti Atardi, Chicosci's frontman Miggy Chavez, and theater actor Nel Gomez.

Set in a post-9/11 America, the musical revolves around Johnny (played by Jason Fernandez), Will (played by Miggy Chavez), and Tunny (played by Nel Gomez)—and how they deal with youth issues including the media, drugs, and teen pregnancy, among many others.

Jason Fernandez talked about his role in an interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the media during the musical's launch at Hard Rock Cafe in Makati City last May 24.

He added, "Ang tao talagang nagma-mature o natuto sa pagkakamali. Hindi naman sa sinasabi ng iba. Parang ganun yung story ni Johnny."

The Doble Kara star noted that he has been a long-time fan of the band and even went overseas just to watch them perform live.

When asked which of their songs is his favorite, the Kapamilya performer answered, "Dati 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' pero nung ito, nag-rehearse na kami, ang pinaka-paborito ko yung 'Whatsername' yung title nung song.

Jason explained, "Siguro, well, maganda yung melody and ang ganda nung arrangement nung song.

For this theatrical production, Jason and the rest of the cast members underwent a series of auditions that required them to sing one or two of Green Day's songs.

Jason performed "St. Jimmy" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends" during the auditions.

"Alam mo yung pagtanda ko, ‘Oy, alam mo may ginawa akong… nag-theater ako. Hindi lang sex, drugs, and rock and roll. We take this very seriously."

The We Love OPM contestant said he wanted to try different kinds of performing arts which made him decide to audition for a role in the rock musical.

'Tapos yung mga techniques, marami akong natututunan so nag-eenjoy ako basta sining 'yan, arts."

FROM MUSIC TO THEATER. Jason is no stranger to the world of theater. The former band vocalist revealed that he has done several productions for Sining Pinagpala Theater Foundation. His last appearance in a stage play was two years ago.

The singer also admitted that he's still learning a lot from this experience.

When asked if penetrating the theater industry was part of his career plan, Jason answered, "Hindi ko talaga siya plinano pero isa lang talaga ang plano ko—yung mag-grow ako as an artist, as a musician kasi the rest will follow.

Currently, Jason still prioritizes his music career. He plans to release a new album soon. He told the press, "Ngayon nagre-record ako ng bagong album. Baka i-release din naming ng July, hopefully. Pero kaya din naman siguro."
