MMFF 2014 entries gross P701 million; English Only Please joins top four highest-grossing films

The Derek Ramsay-Jennylyn Mercado starrer, English Only Please, was able to replace Kubot as the No. 4 top-grossing MMFF entry.



The 40th Metro Manila Film Fest entries have already earned P701 million in the box-office as of January 1, 2015.

There has also a been a change in the box-office ranking since the Derek Ramsay-Jennylyn Mercado starrer, English Only Please, was able to join the top four highest-grossing films of MMFF 2014.

The romantic comedy was able to replace the action comedy film Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2 as the No. 4 top-grossing MMFF entry as of January 1.

This was revealed by Dominic Du of the MMFF executive committee in an interview with Yahoo Philippines.

He reportedly affirmed that the top three top-grossing MMFF movies have remained the same.

Just like on December 25, The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin is still in the lead in the box-office. The Vice Ganda comedy film is then followed by the Kris Aquino-Coco Martin starrer, Feng Shui 2 and the Vic Sotto-Ryzza Mae Dizon starrer My Big Bossing.

The MMFF Execom official did not disclose the box-office figures of the top four box-office earners.

Last December 26, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair and overall MMFF head Francis Tolentino revealed that the combined box-office gross of the eight official mainstream entries already reached over P180 million.

Completing this year’s official entries to the MMFF are the following (in no particular order): the Andres Bonifacio bipioc Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo, the horror film Shake, Rattle and Roll XV and the action film Muslim Magnum .357.

In last year's edition, the MMFF 2013 entries grossed P815 million as January 3, 2014.

The 39th edition of the MMFF ended with the entries earning close to P1 billion.

The awards received by English Only Please during the Gabi ng Parangal have generated interest in the movie that earned for Derek and Jennylyn their trophies as Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively.

Directed by Dan Villegas, English Only Please also bagged the awards for Best Screenplay, Best Original Story, and Best Editor.
