Kim Chiu is proud to represent women "[na] seryosong nagmamahal"

“I’m sure lahat ng girls makaka-relate,” says Kim Chiu about her character in the romantic-comedy movie Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo. Based on the Ramon Bautista book of the same title, this is her first movie project with Xian Lim.

Kim Chiu transformed radically for her new movie with Xian Lim titled Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo?

The 23-year-old actress would always say “kakaiba ako” in her past movies, but for this new Star Cinema movie offering, Kim had to change her physical appearance.

The ABS-CBN actress said, “Ito, literal na kakaibang Kim. ‘Yong pisikal na anyo, iba talaga.”

In the movie, Kim is cast as Sandy Veloso, a brainy “ugly duckling” with thick curly hair and thick eyebrows.

She veers away from her usual dramatic roles to tackle the romantic comedy genre.

Kim pointed out during the press conference of the movie recently, “Dito ko tinahak ‘yong ibang genre, not only drama but now to bonggang-bonggang comedy.

“Umiikot talaga ‘yong natutunan ko. Marami akong bagong natutunan dito sa mundo ng comedy.”

In the trailer, Kim looks funny in the movie as a fashion challenged individual who becomes even more unkempt when she gets a breakdown because of her mounting problems. Despite its lighthearted treatment, the young actress said that audiences, especially female viewers, will learn serious lessons about relationships through this movie.

Even Kim said that she could somehow relate to Sandy, her character who was dumped by her boyfriend Gardo (played by Kean Cipriano).

“Si Sandy kasi, ‘yong character ko doon, grabe siya magmahal, sobra-sobra pa sa sarili niya. Parang hindi niya alam ‘yong worth niya.

“I’m sure maraming makaka-relate na girls sa akin, na ganun ‘yong feeling—sobra kang magmahal pero you’re not receiving it back, ‘yong pagmamahal na binibigay mo.

“Nandoon din kung paano ka mag-move on.

“Nandoon din ‘yong makakakilala ka ng newfound love.”

She added, “Nakakatuwa. Ang sarap ng feeling na i-portray ‘yon and mag-represent ka sa lahat ng babaeng seryosong nagmamahal.”

Since this is her first movie project with perennial loveteam partner Xian, the former Ina Kapatid Anak actress did not deny that she’s both excited and nervous about its outcome in the box-office.

“Sana maraming tao ang manood and sana marami kaming taong mapasaya pagkatapos nilang manood."

Kim also pointed out another valuable lesson that moviegoers can pick up from their movie: "Sa lahat ng manonood nito, mamahalin nila lalo ang sarili nila, malalaman nila ang worth kung sino ka.

"Parang ang daming dadaan [sa buhay] mo pero ikaw lang ang tutulong sa sarili mo.

"'Ika nga sa kanta, there is more to life than love."

Aside from Kim and Xian, the movie also stars Kean Cipriano and Internet sensation Ramon Bautista, who is also the author of the best selling book that the movie was based on.

Joyce Bernal, the director of the movie, described Ramon Bautista's book as "upfront." When asked about the role of Ramon in the film, she explained, "Alam n'yo yung Jerry Maguire na nagsasalita na lalaki, ganun namin siya in-incorporate sa movie. May mga sinasabi siya na pang-move on."

Why did Star Cinema decide to do a movie adaptation of Ramon's "self-help" book?

Mico del Rosario, Advertising and Promotions Manager, explained: "Since this is part of Star Cinema's 20th anniversary offering, we are trying to pay homage to things that we did before. We did Dekada '70 and Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa? [both based on novels] but this time, comedy naman. Nagfu full circle ang Star Cinema ngayon."

Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo? is the third movie offering of Star Cinema for its 20th anniversary. It will be shown in cinemas nationwide starting July 31, 2013.
