Star Cinema has changed the norm when it comes to casting celebrities to top-bill its movies.
For many years, Star Cinema movies featured celebrities not only from its mother company ABS-CBN but also those from rival network, GMA-7.
The rivalry or the so-called network war between two of the largest TV stations in the country, ABS-CBN and GMA-7, has not prevented some Filipino celebrities from crossing over to the film production arm of the Kapamilya Network.
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) lists down GMA-7 stars who have appeared in Star Cinema movies.
Note that this list only features celebrities who top-billed Star Cinema movies while they were still Kapuso stars.
The list of actors and actresses working with Star Cinema continues to grow, with Kapuso heartthrob Alden Richards being the latest celebrity to work with ABS-CBN Films.
Alden is currently working with Kathryn Bernardo for the movie, Hello, Love, Goodbye to be directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina.
The two stars shot their scenes in Hong Kong for their movie that will depict the world of OFWs.
In 2011, Star Cinema’s entry for MMFF starred Kapuso actor Dingdong Dantes along with Kris Aquino and Angelica Panganiban. They top-billed the horror movie, Segunda Mano, which was directed by Joyce Bernal. Dingdong co-produced this film with Kris. Dingdong defied the network war and was able to win the MMFF 2011 Best Actor award for this film.
Since then, Dingdong has been regularly doing movies with ABS-CBN Films and has been paired with various Kapamilya actresses.
In 2012, Dingdong reunited with Angelica Panganiban for the MMFF 2012 entry One More Try. He was joined by Zanjoe Marudo and Kapuso-turned-Kapamilya star Angel Locsin. Dingdong also bagged the Best Actor award for this blockbuster hit.
Dingdong was seen again on the big screen but this time, he had Bea Alonzo as his leading lady in the 2013 film She’s The One. Directed by Mae Cruz-Alviar, this movie also featured Kapuso actress LJ Reyes.
This was followed by another reunion movie with Angelica Panganiban titled The Unmarried Wife (2016). They formed an unusual love triangle with Paulo Avelino.
Dingdong was named Film Actor of the Year for The Unmarried Wife during the 48th Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation Box Office Entertainment Awards.
In 2017, Dingdong starred in a powerhouse cast film by Cathy Garcia-Molina. In Seven Sundays, Dingdong was cast as the sibling of Aga Muhlach, Cristine Reyes, and Enrique Gil in this family comedy-drama film.
Last year, Dingdong had the chance to try a new movie genre by being part of the fantasy-comedy film Fantastica. He joined Vice Ganda and Richard Gutierrez in Star Cinema and Viva Films' official entry to MMFF 2018.
Like Dingdong, his wife Marian Rivera has also done a movie with Star Cinema.
Marian worked with Ai-Ai Delas Alas for the action comedy Kung Fu Divas.
Directed by Onat Diaz, this movie was part of Star Cinema's 20th anniversary presentation in 2013.
Kung Fu Divas was considered an ambitious project not only because this was Ai-Ai and Marian's first movie, but also because it made use of cutting-edge technology to visually capture the lead stars’ escapades that crossed the borders between reality and fantasy.
Jennylyn Mercado marked a milestone in her career when she starred in Just The Three of Us with John Lloyd Cruz in 2016.
It earned P16 million on opening day, the highest opening day gross for any of Jennylyn's past movies. This Star Cinema movie went on to be one of the highest-grossing films in 2016.
This 2019, she is set to top-bill another Star Cinema movie through her upcoming project with JM de Guzman and Richard Gutierrez titled Heart of Mine.
In 2008, Star Cinema did a casting coup by pairing two stars from different networks. At that time, Richard Gutierrez was with GMA-7 while KC Concepcion was visible in ABS-CBN.
Directed by Joyce Bernal, the movie For The First Time was shot mostly in Santorini, Greece.
At that time, Richard was one of the most visible actors of the Kapuso Network.
Nine years after the film was released, Richard officially became a Kapamilya when he signed with ABS-CBN in 2017.
In 2011, veteran comedian and box-office king Vic Sotto worked with Star Cinema through the comedy flick Pak! Pak! My Dr. Kwak! He got to act opposite Bea Alonzo.
Vic took with him the comic tandem of Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola, two of his co-hosts in Eat Bulaga and are often sidekicks in his past movies.
Pak! Pak! My Dr. Kwak! was Vic's reunion with Star Cinema after 14 years. In 1997, he did the movie Biyudo Si Daddy, Biyuda Si Mommy with Coney Reyes. It was co-produced by Star Cinema and Vic's M-ZET Productions.
Also in 2011, Vic starred in a film alongside Ai-Ai delas Alas. They joined forces to combine the Enteng Kabisote and Tanging Ina franchises and called their film Enteng ng Ina Mo.
It was an official entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival, and a joint production of Star Cinema, APT Entertainment, and OctoArts Films.
Veteran actor and Eat Bulaga host Joey de Leon starred with Sarah Geronimo and Gerald Anderson in Won’t Last a Day Without You.
In the 2011 film, the comedian played the Sarah’s rock star dad.
In an interview, Joey said that Sarah is one of his favorite performers, which is why he had no problem saying yes to this project.
Former Kapuso actress Isabelle Daza appeared for the first time on the big screen via the 2013 film, It Takes A Man and A Woman.
It was the third installment of John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo's previous box-office hits, A Very Special Love (2008) and You Changed My Life (2009).
In the film It Takes a Man and a Woman, Isabelle was cast as John Lloyd’s new girlfriend.
A year later, in 2014, Isabelle transferred to ABS-CBN.
Solenn Heussaff had the chance to cross over to Star Cinema when she top-billed the comedy-horror movie, Da Possessed, in 2014. She played the leading lady of Vhong Navarro.
A totally different Solenn was seen in this film as she showed her wacky side. The movie was a joint co-production of Star Cinema and Regal Films.
While most Kapuso stars were handpicked for their respective roles, Benjamin Alves auditioned to be part of the 2014 drama film, The Trial.
In this Star Cinema movie, he worked with John Lloyd Cruz, Richard Gomez, Gretchen Barretto, Jessy Mendiola, and Enrique Gil.
Apart from doing mainstream films, Star Cinema has produced and distributed an independent film that was chosen to be the closing film of Cinemalaya 2015. The suspense thriller Silong brought together Piolo Pascual and GMA-7 actress Rhian Ramos.
After this stint, Rhian did the comedy movie directed by Jason Paul Laxamana, Fallback, with Zanjoe Marudo. This Star Cinema movie was shown in 2017.
The romantic-drama film, You're Still the One (2015), paved the way for GMA-7 actor Dennis Trillo to be paired with Maja Salvador on the big screen.
Directed by Chris Martinez, this movie showcased the daring side of both Maja and Dennis when they did a bed scene.
Also part of the cast were Richard Yap and Ellen Adarna.
Veteran actress Jaclyn Jose took part in the MMFF 2018 highest-grossing film, Fantastica, that starred Vice Ganda, Richard Gutierrez, and fellow Kapuso star Dingdong Dantes.
Jaclyn is no stranger to Star Cinema movies, but this was her first film under Star Cinema as an exclusive Kapuso artist.
