Charo Santos-Concio returns to acting via Lav Diaz film Ang Babaeng Humayo

Charo Santos-Concio confirmed last  May 29 that she has done shooting a new movie with director Lav Diaz titled Ang Babaeng Humayo.

“Yeah, it’s true.”

This was the answer of ABS-CBN Chief Content Officer Charo Santos-Concio when asked if she will return to acting.

Charo will topbill Lav Diaz’s new film titled Ang Babaeng Humayo.

The former ABS-CBN President confirmed this last Sunday, May 29, during the press conference for Maalaala Mo Kaya’s 25th anniversary.

According to Ma'am Charo, they completed shooting scenes of the movie in a span of 10 shooting days.

When asked what convinced her to go back to doing films, Charo revealed that she was personally asked by Direk Lav if she’s willing to star in his new film, which is produced by Cinema One.

She explained, “When he [Lav] came back from Berlin, he asked me if I would reconsider going back to acting. If it’s an interesting character [why not?].

“Two days after he sent me the script. Binasa ko ng buo, nagustuhan ko siya.”

Star Cinema Managing Director Malou Santos then blurted out, “Definitely, you’ll see a new Charo, and magugulat kayo dun sa ginawa niya. Yun lang ang kaya kong sabihin.”

In an interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other media reporters after the presscon proper, Charo expressed happiness to become an actress once again.

“It’s nice to be back on the field. It’s nice to see it naman from the perspective of person facing the cameras.

“Iba naman ang challenge kasi you breathe life to the character. Iba naman siya.

“Instead of now looking at the logistics and all the production requirements, looking at cashflows, pagtatrabahuhan mo talaga yung character mo, aalamin mo, kikilalanin mo.”

It will be recalled that Charo was named Best Actress in the Asian Film Festival for her debut movie Itim (1976).

The MMK host said she did not have doubts about accepting the role after she read Direk Lav’s script.

She admitted, “I was so honored to have been approached by The Lav Diaz. I didn’t think twice about it when I read the material.

“I had a discussion with him about the character, his expectations. We also discussed my apprehensions.

“I told him [that] I feel so scared but at the same time excited so it must be the right feeling!”

When reporters asked about her character, she only answered, “Huwag na, baka magkamali pa ako. Wala nang sorpresa.”

This will be Charo’s return to acting after many years. She previously acted in the 1997 TV drama Esperanza as the biological mother of Judy Ann Santos. The series spawned a movie version in 1999.

Afterwards, she became busy as an executive in ABS-CBN. In 2008, she became President of the Kapamilya Network. She was appointed as CEO in 2013 until her retirement in January 2016.

Aside from being the network’s current chief content officer, Charo also serves as president of ABS-CBN University and executive adviser to ABS-CBN’s Chairman Eugenio Lopez III.

On the other hand, Direk Lav is known for his movie Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis that won the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer prize at 66th Berlin International Film Festival.  The said film was topbilled by John Lloyd Cruz and Piolo Pascual.

Recently, Direk Lav's short film Ang Araw Bago Ang Wakas won the Principal prize at the 62nd International Short Film Festival Oberhausen.
