Charo Santos-Concio says the Lav Diaz film Ang Babaeng Humayo is about love and revenge. This movie, which also stars John Lloyd Cruz, will compete in the 73rd Venice Film Fest.

“My mother was a singer.

“She wanted me to be a singer.

“You know, she’s very frustrated about it. But singing is not just about recording. Singing is about performing and I was just a bit too shy for that,” paliwanag niya.

How does it feel na pati sa recording ay pinasok na rin niya?

“I’m enjoying every moment ‘di ba? Sabi ko nga, e, when you get this point you just go with the flow and welcome the opportunities that come your way.

“Wala ng masyadong pinagiisipan.

“You don’t make a big deal about it. Either you want to do it or you do not want to do it ‘di ba? You don’t make a big deal about it, about things anymore.”

“Oo, yeah, the title of the album is Life Songs. We hope we may be able to inspire our Kapamilya lalung-lalo na nga yung ating mga OFWs natin na nag-iisa sa ibang bansa.

“Kapag namimi-miss nila ang pamilya nila, nalulungkot sila, sana makapagdala man lang ng relief sa kanila or kilig.”

Ang iba pa’ng kanta na nakapaloob sa commemorative album ay ang “Handog” nina Aiza Seguerra at Noel Cabangon, “Iingatan Ka” ng mag-inang sina Janella Salvador at Jenine Desiderio, “Because You Loved Me,” “I’ll Be There For You,” “You,” “She’s Always a Woman” ni Piolo, “Gaya ng Dati” ni Gary Valenciano, “Piece by Piece” ni KZ Tandingan at “I’ll Be There.”

It makes one reflective.

“I believe in the resilience of the Filipino. Matibay tayo, matatag tayo as a people. Sobra ang pagmamahal natin sa pamilya.

“Lahat gagawin natin para sa pamilya natin. ‘Yan ang talaga, sobra.

“And when I listen to their stories, yung paghanga ko sa kanila lalong lumalaki kasi, you know, if you’re struggling about survival, ‘di ba, hindi madali ang mga choices na ginagawa nila.

“Pero naninindigan sila because they want to offer better quality of life for their children.

“That’s admirable. No matter how painful it may be and no matter how big their sacrifices are, uh, I have so much empathy and admiration for them.”

ANG BABAENG HUMAYO IN VENICE FILM FEST.

I feel I’m starting all over again. Parang I’ve come full circle and what can I say? I feel so blessed.

“‘Di ba, it could have been any other actress. I mean, this is about Lav.

“This is about the director. This is his film. Ah, pero, the stars aligned that you know, na ako ang naisip na bigyan ng pagkakaton ni Lav, ni Direk Lav. So, yeah, I’m excited.

“I’m looking forward to meeting the other artists, directors, writers, producers from other part of the world and learn from them.

“There’s so much to learn from artists.”

Hahaha!

“Mamamatay akong humahanga at umiidiolo sa mga great talent.”

What about being a co-nominee ng foreign artists na makakasama niya sa Venice?

“Ah, you know, one step at a time. Hindi ko naman parang, you know, this invitation came as surprise, as a pleasant surprise. I’m so excited and doon na lang muna.

“I would go there for the experience, yeah.”

Is it true na ang kwento ng Ang Babaeng Humayo is about love and revenge?

“Yeah, it’s about love and revenge, and transcendence of one’s humanity.
How do you let go of your past? How do you let go of your baggages?

“How does one go back after going through so much pain in life? How does one begin to appreciate the endearing goodness in man?”
