The coming-of-age thriller Birdshot will represent the Philippines in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 2018 Oscars.
Starring Arnold Reyes, Mary Joy Apostol, and John Arcilla, Birdshot has been chosen as the official entry of the country to the 90th Academy Awards.
Film Academy of the Philippines Secretary General Leo Martinez confirmed this to PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) through a message sent earlier today, September 26.
The FAP selected the entry that will vie to become the first Pinoy movie to earn a Best Foreign Language Film nomination in the Oscars.
Directed by Mikhail Red, Birdshot won as Best Film at the 29th Tokyo International Film Festival held in November 2016.
The film tells the story of a young Filipino teenage girl who wanders into the boundaries of a Philippines reservation forest. Deep within the reservation, she mistakenly shoots and kills a critically endangered and protected Philippine eagle.
As local authorities begin a manhunt to track down the poacher of a national bird, their investigation leads them to an even more horrific discovery.
The 90th Academy Awards will take place on March 4, 2018 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) will release an initial shortlist of 9 before announcing the final five nominees for the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Last year, the Philippine entry was Brillante Mendoza's Ma'Rosa starring Jaclyn Jose.
