"Tawagin na lang natin siyang seduction scene,” says Rachel Alejandro of an intimate scene with co-actor Paulo Avelino in the movie, Ang Larawan.
Ang Larawan is one of the official entries to the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
Shot during the early part of the movie’s production, the scene portrays their characters, Paula and Tony, in what Rachel calls a “seduction scene.”
While Rachel and Paulo have done similar scenes in their respective theater and movie roles, Rachel was surprised at how tedious the process of shooting was.
“Matagal na akong di gumagawa ng film. [I realized] it’s so technical, so precise pala,” admits Rachel.
“Pag tinignan mo sa film, ang ganda ng ilaw, parang ang bango-bango namin. Pero sa totoo lang, pawisan kami. Malagkit. Lalo na ang init sa bahay. Yung damit ko mukhang basahan kasi yun ang role namin—naghihirap.”
Nevertheless, Rachel says it wasn’t awkward at all for her or Paulo. “Very professional naman,” says the actress singer, who admits she has had her share of torrid kissing scenes—not so much on the big screen—but on the theater stage.
“Very tasteful ang treatment ni Direk Loy [Arcenas],” Rachel adds.
Although it’s difficult for Rachel to say whether she has onscreen chemistry with Paulo, she says people have told her that yes, indeed, they project together beautifully in the movie.
“Nung nakita ko sa screen, parang there was really something, na parang may energy kaming dalawa,” says Rachel.
Ang Larawan was part of the second batch of movies to be named official entries to the MMFF this year. The movie is the film adaptation of Larawan, The Musical, which is based on National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin’s English play, A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino. Ang Larawan recently made its world premiere at the 30th Tokyo International Film Festival.
Ang Larawan is set in pre-World War II time. It tells the story of two unmarried sisters, Paula and Candida, whose father, a high-profile painter, Don Lorenzo Marasigan, has not produced a single painting in a long time. The family is in financial trouble and the sisters are urged to sell the house. The patriarch’s self-portrait gains attention and starts to fetch a high sum. The sisters are being convinced by the people around them to sell the portrait. Their boarder, Tony Javier, presents an irresistible proposition.
Joanna Ampil brings life to Candida, Rachel Alejandro is cast as Paula while Paulo Avelino plays the naughty boarder Tony Javier.
Joining them are cast members Celeste Legaspi, Robert Arevalo, Nonie Buencamino, Menchu Lauchengco, Nanette Inventor, and Noel Trinidad, among others.
Ang Larawan opens on December 25 as part of MMFF 2017.
