One of the most talked-about scenes in the movie Kasal showed leading men Paulo Avelino and Derek Ramsay having a sensitive scene inside a shower room.
This was part of the plan of Wado (Derek) to expose Philip's (Paulo) secret: that Philip is bisexual.
In an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) last May 23, Kasal director Ruel Bayani narrated behind-the-scenes stories regarding this intimate scene between Derek and Paulo.
According to the Kapamilya Network executive, the two hunk actors had no problems doing the scene.
He revealed, "In fact, na-pack up pa nga yun one time kasi meron kaming issue tungkol sa logistics, hindi issue tungkol sa scene.
"Wala kaming issue about them doing the scene, it's about...dapat ba dito? Dapat ba sa public place? May mga ganun kaming discussion.
"Yung kwinento ni Derek sa presscon na we had to pack up the scene, naka-ilaw na at lahat and he drove all the way to Pampanga tapos wala na kaming nakunan sa eksena niya, it was simply because we all agreed na parang asiwa pa akong kunan that time dahil may question pa.
"But it wasn't at all about yung gagawin nila or how daring it will be, walang kaso."
In a previous bloggers' conference, Bayani said that it did not take a lot of convincing for these two actors, as well as lead actress Bea Alonzo, to do intimate scenes for Kasal.
For the shower scene, the director observed that Derek and Paulo were more concerned about their fight scene rather than focusing on the fact that they would be baring skin while in close proximity with each other inside a shower stall.
"Wala, nag-blocking lang, mas concerned pa sila doon sa nagsakitan sila," recalled Bayani.
"Blocking lang, kailangan talaga yun and napansin ko, ang concern nila, yung acting nila.
"Unang-una, hindi na sila mga bata so hindi na sila maraming inhibitions sa body.
"Kita niyo naman, opening pa lang ni Bea, naka two-piece na, how different is that for all the other Bea movies na kita mo, parang di siya comfortable. Dito, iba na siya that is why a lot of people are saying na ang ganda niya dito sa movie, kasi merong comfort and relaxed vibe into it.
"Wala man lang akong complaints about them taking off their clothes or having love scenes, wala kaming ganun."
Same goes with Bea, who even suggested taking off her clothes in a different way compared to other love scenes in Pinoy films.
"One funny story is Bea, supposedly ibababa ni Bea yung green niyang parang nightgown.
"Sabi niya, 'Direk, lagi na lang ganyan yung eksena, binababa. Okay lang sa akin na sa taas na kunin.'
"Sabi ko, 'Ha? E, di pag ginawa mo yun, e, di makikita yung gilid? 'No, okay lang Direk kasi ganun naman talaga.'"
Another instance was also Derek's sex scene with Kylie Versoza.
"Yung actors pa yung ano non, kay Derek din ganun din, si Kylie na-carried away doon sa isang part, masyadong naibaba yung boxer niya [Derek], dapat parang half lang, talagang nabuo.
"Wala rin, nagtawanan lang kami after that, and if you remember na PG, so there were also some shots na hindi na pumasok sa final cut."
RISK WORTH-TAKING. Kasal is one of the few mainstream movies produced by Star Cinema that tackled sensitive gender issues and have the actors engage in such provocative scenes.
Bayani pointed out that producing this kind of movie is a big risk.
He said, "For all of us, I must say, ha.
"Kasi noong una, alam mo yung ganitong movie, okay lang ito kung maliit ang budget, e, with actors who are not this popular or who are not of this stature.
"But nagkataon na we all felt it was a risk worth-taking. And do I like the idea? Now kasi, ang nakahashtag sa amin, #TheKasalControversy.
"I wanted that from the start because people who know my movies, it's always controversial and parang naka-preset na rin sa utak ng mga tao yun, alam na nila, ine-expect na nila na may love scene, alam na nila na the characters are emotional so I wasn't at all scared na palabasing controversial siya.
"Hindi naman yun marketing strategy, it really is the story itself."
Bayani is happy that the stars also took risks in doing this movie.
For Bea, he said, "I'm very proud of Bea kasi noong una, iniisip ko, people have always considered Bea as queen na parang ingat na ingat sa image.
"But the truth is, now I've worked with her, she's an artist, she's not just a queen, she's a great actress. She's willing to try new things, she's willing to take on more challenging characters.
"She's willing to, maraming times. Mapu-pull off ba ni Bea itong scene na ito? 'Direk, let me try. I want to try it, I want to challenge myself.'
"I'm very happy for the work that she put in and the work that she did in the movie."
Bayani also praised the two leading men who were able to pull off their characters in Kasal.
"Also the boys, Derek and Paulo for being the perfect contrast. And some people say, siyempre mas maraming kailangang linawin sa character ni Paulo but honestly, in my opinion, without Derek's character, without that conflict, anong mangyayari sa movie?
"Madali lang isipin na parang he may be in less scenes but yung impact naman noong every scene na nandoon siya, hindi aabot, hindi tayo aabot doon kung wala yung character niya and the way he played it.
"So I'm very happy for Derek and then lastly, siyempre, Pau, because it's my very first time to work with him.
"Hindi ko nga alam dati kung magkakasundo kami, may pagka ano kasi siya, quiet in the beginning so hindi mo alam, you will wonder kung nagkakaintindihan ba kayo.
"But along the way, people will always say, 'Wow ha, parang ibang Paulo yung nakita namin.'
"Kasi nga, I feel he really worked harder than ever and he made sure that may iba siyang maibibigay and even if sabihin nating quiet siya or mysterious, pagdating sa work hindi mo siya mapupulaan."
