The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) has chosen the 8 official entries to the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP).
Now on its second year, the nationwide week-long celebration will take place from August 15-21 in cinemas nationwide.
During this time, foreign films will not be shown in Philippine cinemas (excluding IMAX).
In partnership with all the theaters in the country, PPP will screen these eight films that will have their Philippine premiere during the event.
The chosen entries should have fulfilled the following criteria:
A. The film should have themes reflective of the Filipino sensibilities culture with wide audience appeal.
B. The film should have been produced from 2017-2018.
C. The film must have its Philippine premiere during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino and must not have been previously shown in any format in the country. Films which premiered internationally are eligible.
The 8 finalists are: Signal Rock by Chito Rono, Ang Babaeng Allergic sa Wifi by Jun Robles Lana, The Day After Valentine's by Jason Paul Laxamana, Bakwit Boys by Jason Paul Laxamana, We Will Not Die Tonight by Richard Somes, Pinay Beauty by Jay Abello, Unli Life by Miko Livelo, and Madilim ang Gabi by Adolf Alix Jr.
1. SIGNAL ROCK (CSR Productions)
Director: Chito Rono
Cast: Christian Bables; Elora Espano
Signal Rock literally refers to a rock in Samar where residents go to in order to boost the signal of their telephones.
In this film, Christian Bables is cast as Intoy, a carefree young man who decides to help his sister in Finland win a child custody battle.
2. ANG BABAENG ALLERGIC SA WIFI (The Idea First Company)
Director: Jun Robles Lana
Cast: Sue Ramirez, Jameson Blake
Ang Babaeng Allergic sa Wifi revolves around Norma (Sue Ramirez), a typical teenager who is always online. She created a joint social media account for her
and her boyfriend to mark their third monthsary. She gets a rare illness called electromagnetic hypersensitivity, which means she can't be around cellphones, tablets, laptops, and Wi-Fi.
To help her cope with her syndrome, Norma relocates to a remote province with no signal, forcing her to have a long-distance relationship with Leo (Markus Paterson).
Aries (Jameson Blake), the younger brother of Leo, spends time with Norma as he tries to hide his feelings for her.
3. THE DAY AFTER VALENTINE'S (VIVA Films)

Cast: Bela Padilla, JC Santos
The synopsis goes: "Kai (JC Santos), a distraught man meets Lani (Bela Padilla), a strong, confident woman who seems to have answers to all of life’s most difficult questions. Kai realizes that with Lani's wisdom and 'go-get' attitude, he may be able to fix everything in his life."
4. BAKWIT BOYS (T-Rex Entertainment)
Director: Jason Paul Laxamana
Cast: Devon Seron, Ryle Santiago
Here is the synopsis of this film: "A supertyphoon ravages the hometown of a family band composed of four boys, putting a halt to their musical pursuits. While taking refuge in a distant farmland, they meet a rich girl who offers to help them record their songs and have them played on the radio. Individual interests and trauma caused by the calamity test the unity of the band, as they struggle to make sense of life’s ironies and tragedies."
5. WE WILL NOT DIE TONIGHT (Straw Dogs Studio and and ErichG Film Productions)
Director: Richard Somes
Cast: Erich Gonzales
Erich, who serves as a co-producer of this film is cast as a stuntwoman named Kray. She is an aspiring actress and an all-around racketeer who can't seem to get a break. A botched deal that goes haywire will challenge her principles and skillset.
6. PINAY BEAUTY (She's No White) (Quantum Films and Epic Media)
Director: Jay Abello
Cast: Edgar Allan Guzman, Chai Fonacier, Nico Antonio, Janus del Prado, Hanna Ledesma, Mariko Ledesma, Amable Tikoy Aguiluz VI, Alan Paule, and Maxine Medina
Pinay Beauty was supposed to be an entry to Cinemalaya 2018 but it withdrew from the competition. The synopsis submitted to Cinemalaya goes: "Migs needs to settle a huge debt to a loan shark. When Migs explains that he doesn't have the money yet, the loan shark proposes that he could settle the bill if Migs could find Lovi Poe and introduce him to the actress. How does a regular guy who knows no one in show business meet a celebrity?"
7. UNLI LIFE (Regal Films)
Director: Miko Livelo
Cast: Vhong Navarro, Wynwyn Marque, Joey Marquez, Ejay Falcon, Donna Cariaga, Jon Lucas, Isabelle De Leon With Special Participation of Dimples Romana, Joem Bascon, Epy Quizon, and Jhong Hilario
8. MADILIM ANG GABI (Deus Lux Mea Films, Sound Investment Equity, Swift Prods., Oro de Siete Prods.)
Director: Adolfo Alix Jr.
Cast: Gina Alajar, Phillip Salvador, Felix Roco, Angel Aquino
Madilim ang Gabi made its world premiere as one of the official entries in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the 42nd Toronto International Film Festival.
The film is described by TIFF as follows: It “looks at the appalling costs of current Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte's extrajudicial war on the country's drug trade, which by conservative estimates has already resulted in 7,000 deaths.
"A middle-aged married couple makes ends meet by dealing drugs on the side; when they decide to quit the trade, their addicted son goes missing. As the desperate parents scour the city for clues, the victims of the drug war continue to pile up, their bodies often dumped in the streets adorned with placards proclaiming their guilt."
