PEP REVIEW: Puss in Boots makers give a new spin to nursery rhyme characters

"You may know my name, but you do not know the legend." - Puss In Boots

As adults, we sometimes (usually) wish that we can go back to the old times and be a kid again—those carefree moments when all we had to do was to dream about going on a wild adventure and satisfy our hunger to experience life.

In Dreamworks Animation’s new 3D cartoon flick Puss In Boots, that wish is brought to life.

THE PLOT. We’ve previously met Puss on the big screen via Shrek 2 in 2004. He was the feisty swashbuckling cat who became friends with Shrek and Donkey.

In this "self-titled" movie, we take a look into the life of the Latin-tongued feline’s journey prior to meeting his ogre buddy.

The story occurs when Puss was convinced by his old friend Humpty Alexander Dumpty to steal the "magic beans" from the notorious pair of Jack and Jill.

He teams up with a new character, Kitty Softpaws, to do the job.

Eventually, they are able to succeed, only to find out that he was used by Humpty to further his selfish ambitions—he wants to get rich by stealing the golden egg-laying baby goose.

Puss gets arrested and goes to prison for his criminal actions. There he meets Jack, the original bearer of the beans.

Jack then reveals to him that Humpty’s plans could turn devastating if they do not return the baby goose to its vengeful mother.

Soon, Puss escapes jail using his wide-eyed charm with the help of Kitty who comes to the aide of her beloved.

Puss gets into another action-packed round of adventure to save the town from destruction.

The film features the voices of Antonio Banderas as Puss, Salma Hayek as Kitty, Zach Galifianakis as Humpty Alexander Dumpty, and Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris as Jack and Jill respectively.

THE REVIEW. We’d have to say that hands down, it is one of the best movies we’ve seen in 3D so far.

Starting from the Dreamworks logo up until the end credits, you would find yourself reaching for the floating figures in front of you because the images are just so distinct and almost true to life.

At times you might even dodge and cover to protect yourself from flying pieces of wood, trees, etc. scattered from the action scenes.

And oh, the fuzzy fluff of hair on Puss and Kitty! They are just too cute and realistic that you’d want to stroke them through as they pass in front of you.

Just like other animated movies from the said production company, the colors and graphics of Puss In Boots are very rich and captivating.

The candy tones of the surroundings and the bursting effects of light and sound from every swish of Puss’ sword complete the whole fairy tale experience.

Also, just like in the super funny Shrek movies, the dialogues in this flick are outright hilarious and witty. Here’s one example:

Jill asks: "Is it true a cat always lands on its feet?"
Puss answers: "No! That is just a rumor, spread by dogs!"

It’s also interesting how the writers of this movie gave a spin to the famous nursery rhymes characters of Jack, Jill, and Humpty Dumpty.

Who would’ve thought they were actually outlaws and evil masterminds in an alternate fantasy world?

According to information posted on the movie’s Wikipedia entry, the characters in this film are all new except for Puss.

The reason behind this is that at the time the movie was being made, Shrek 3 and Shrek 4 were still in the works and the writers did not want to have conflicting storylines.

Although, putting oneself in the shoes of the producers, it would be quite nerve-wracking to think that fans of the original franchise may not appreciate this new treatment.

But it seems it all came out positively because the fresh twists and turns of the story give the movie an entirely different flavor from Shrek.

It’s an all-new adventure to look forward to but at the same time, it still carries a familiar sense of cleverness and child-like fancy.

So if you haven’t planned anything yet for the long weekend, then Puss In Boots is a great way to bond with the entire family.

Puss in Boots is currently being screened in cinemas.
