James Reid, Nadine Lustre, The Company, Side A competing in Philpop 2015


On July 25, composers and interpreters will compete for the top prize of the 4th Philippine Popular Music Festival.

The 12 shortlisted finalists were chosen from over 2,500 submissions from the Philippines, the United States, Canada, Australia, the Middle East and other Southeast Asian countries.

For Philpop 2015, the Top 12 songs chosen were "I Owe You My Heart" by MJ Morallos, "Nasaan" by Lara Maigue, "Tanging Pag-asa Ko" by Paul Armesin, "For The Rest Of My Life" by Ned Esguerra, "Triangulo" by Thyro Alfaro & Yumi Lacsamana, "Kilig" by Soc Villanueva, "Paratingin Mo Naman Siya" by Davey Langit, "Sa Ibang Mundo" by Mark Villar, "Musikaw" by Melchor Magno Jr., "Walang Hanggang" by Ramiro Mataro, "Edge Of The World" by Johannes Daniel Garcia, at "Apat Na Buwang Pasko" by Gino Cruz & Jeff Arcilla.

A mix of established names and rising sensations were chosen as interpreters for the songwriting competition headed by PhilPop executive director Ryan Cayabyab and managing director Patricia Bermudez-Hizon.

The interpreters were recently presented in a press conference that also launched the official PhilPOP 2015 album produced and distributed by Viva Records.

In addition to the beautifully crafted Ramon Orlina trophy, this year’s winners will receive cash prizes in the amount of P1M for the grand prize; P500,000 for the first runner-up; and P250,000 for the second runner-up. All of the finalists will also get P50,000 each.

  1. WALANG HANGGAN

Ramiru Mataro is the unique singer-songwriter of this techno-pop tune that is somewhat of a genre-buster as it also incorporates elements of alternative, jazz and R&B.

Singing heartthrob James Reid was named champion of the reality show Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition in 2010. But it was on the big screen where he would claim his biggest success as Cross in the blockbuster hit Diary Ng Panget. Along with loveteam partner Nadine Lustre, James topbilled the movie Para Sa Hopeless Romantic and starred in the ABS-CBN teleserye On The Wings of Love.

Pio, at only 20 years old, is one of the youngest rappers in the country. He has released his own album titled Dukha which featured his version of “Himig Ng Pag-ibig” featuring Pinoy folk icon Lolita Carbon.

Anja Aguilar has grown up a lot from her days as champion of the Little Big Star talent search on television. The 22-year-old ASAP performer has recently released an album titled Beginnings where she sings ballads like “Silver Linings,” “Nababaliw” and “Labis Kitang Mahal.”





  1. TRIANGULO

Interpreted by Thyro Alfaro & Yumi Lacsamana with Jeric Medina

The music tandem of Thyro & Yumi was the Grand Prize winner of Philpop 2013 for the song “Dati,” interpreted by Sam Concepcion and Tippy Dos Santos. Aside from releasing their own album for Viva Records, they have written and produced tracks for Sarah Geronimo (‘Kilometro” and “Dulo”) and Nadine Lustre (“Bahala Na” and Aba Bakit Hindi) as well as the soundtrack of Diary Ng Panget.

The soulful balladeer Jeric Medina came in fourth in the finals of the first season of The Voice of the Philippines.


  1. FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE

Interpreted by Side A

Side A, the country’s legendary pop band, ventures into competition territory with this song composed by bass player Ned Esguerra. Side A is known for hit songs such as “So Many Questions,” “Forevermore,” “Tell Me” and others. Performing “For The Rest Of My Life” are Leevon Cailao on guitar and lead vocals, Naldy Gonzales on keyboards, Ernie Severino on drums and Ned Esguerra on bass.

  1. SA IBANG MUNDO

Nadine Lustre started out as a child actress and later lead singer of the group Popgirls. Jon Santos is an actor, comedian, impersonator and host of The Jon Santos Show. He was seen in the musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert and is one of the stars of Bituing Walang Ningning. He is a top drawer in the concert circuit and has just returned from a Canadian tour with Sarah Geronimo. "Apat Na Buwang Pasko" is his first venture into recording.

Singer, composer, performer, guitarist and ukelele player Davey Langit started his career as a graduate of Pinoy Dream Academy. He has since then recorded the song “Selfie,” became a radio DJ, Pinas 95.5 and a favorite performer in local nightspots. He was also a finalist in last year’s Philpop competition with “NGSB (No Girlfriend Since Break).” For this year’s edition, Davey is not only a composer, he is also the performer of his own work.

Known for her 2013 PhilPOP entry “Sa’yo na Lang Ako” that made it to the Top 5, Lara Maigue has since become a sought after songwriter for films and TV series. She also made her acting debut in TV5’s weekly musical comedy Trenderas. According to Lara,“Nasaan” is about losing someone very close to your heart, something she herself has personally experienced. She added that the melody of this piano-based, “cinematic” ballad was actually written last year and it was only later when she decided to add the lyrics.

Josh Padilla is the son of ‘80s singing idol Gino Padilla. He has appeared in the movies Talk Back and You’re Dead, Diary Ng Panget, television, the Bagets series, Sunday Funday and is now an MTV Pinoy VJ.

Yassi is slated to topbill the movie Girlfriend For Hire with Andre Paras. The 20-year-old actress has acted in movies such as Diary Ng Panget and Talk Back And You’re Dead as well as TV shows such as Wattpad Presents My Fiance Since Birth, Magpakailanman. She has released the singles “Hush” with Nadine Lustre and “Di Ko Alam” with Andre Paras. MTV Pinoy VJ Yassi is slated to release her own album soon.
