Karylle returns to the music scene with her new album, A Different Playground, released under PolyEast Records.
Last February 26, Karylle trended on Twitter with the hashtag #KarylleADPLaunchEastwood during her album launch at the Eastwood Mall Open Park.
Fans cheered in full support as the Kapamilya singer-host performed new arrangements of her hit songs and key songs from the new album.
Having a musician/songwriter/band vocalist as a husband motivated Karylle to express her musicality. The daughter of Zsa Zsa Padilla recalled that she found herself wanting to be surrounded by “a field of sunflowers.”
“I guess the main theme would be, where our starting point, basically me saying I wanna be in a field of sunflowers,” the It's Showtime host told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) regarding her album.
“It was more like a happy, sunny day, you know what I mean?
“Parang, sharing more who I am with everyone and just my silly self.”
“So, parang, it’s just like a feeling. A general direction. ’Cause we don’t really do pegs, baka masyadong limiting.
“Kasi even in our wedding, we didn’t have pegs or a theme“
In a way, A Different Playground took off from where her last album in 2014, simply titled K, left off.
“[K] was more like, I had gotten closer to people because of Showtime and people started calling me K, so I was pleasantly surprised,” Karylle explained.
“At first I was like ‘Hah? Who’s that calling me?’ Parang an old friend. Yun pala hindi ko kakilala.
“Pero it took me a while for it to sink in na parang, wow, parang they’ve really, like, accepted me as part of their lives in a super close way, so nung una, hindi ko ma-gets.
“Tapos unting-unti ko siyang naiintindihan. Siyempre sobrang naappreciate.
“At that point, it was like, close, I’m part of your home, parang ganun.
“So I was like, okay, thank you, so now it’s like, ‘Okay, let me go in.’”
Karylle herself wrote songs for her sixth studio album, A Different Playground. The track “Can’t Shut Up” is for her husband, Spongecola frontman Yael Yuzon, who loves to talk. Meanwhile, the track “Sunflowers” is her collaboration with childhood friend Robin Nievera.
NOT ABOUT THE RATINGS Karylle admits that she used to fuss over TV ratings, but she has now learned to let it go.
“I used to be obsessed with it, to be honest.” She said.
“Like there was a time I was obsessed with chismis sites and ratings and it consumed me. Parang I was missing the point, so I kinda…
“I know what the ratings are, like we’re [Showtime] doing better or whatever. I kinda stopped letting it be on the top of my head.”
For her, she simply looks forward to It’s Showtime’s continuing its mission of celebrating Filipino talent.
“It’s exciting kasi siyempre ngayon everyone’s talking about Tawag ng Tanghalan and it’s celebrating Filipino talent, as usual, marami naman talented sa Pinoy.
“Dati kasi todohan ng tumblingan, so ngayon ganun naman sa kantahan. And I think, Tawag ng Tangahalan was able to do that for the show.”
