Jed Madela to those linking him to Darren Espanto: "Huwag ninyong i-involve yung bata kasi he's a minor."

Jed Madela admits, "Naging fan na talaga ako ni Darren and I was very vocal about it kahit minsan bina-bash na nga ako."

“I was given the chance to have a break for three weeks. Yun nga, nag-WCOPA kami, nag-States ako. I distance myself from everything here sa Pilipinas. Things that were bothering me here, mga issues dito, mga kaguluhan.

“Saka na-realize ko talaga that I’m truly blessed. I’m blessed na I don’t want na mas bibigyan ko ng pansin ‘tong mga nega na nangyayari kasi sayang, e.

“Hindi mo maa-appreciate yung mga happy things na nangyayari kung doon ka nakatutok. So, yung trip na yun really helped a lot.

“I realized na I’m blessed, I’m happy and compared to a lot of artists now. Happy ako sa takbo ng career ko kasi consistent na may ginagawa. Hindi ako nawawala.

“Sobrang saya ko when we were in the States kasi sinabi ni Jonathan [Manalo, Star Music executive] sa amin na ire-release na in iTunes yung album.

“In span of hours, No. 1 kami ni Darren [Espanto] agad, yung duet namin, I'll be there. Tapos nakita naming most downloaded siya sa album and sobrang saya.

“Sobrang saya to the point na the fans were asking for a back-to-back album with Darren, back-to-back concert. I’d be very happy to collaborate with Darren in a big production, if there’s a producer who’s willing to produce these projects, why not?”

Nagbalik-tanaw si Jed sa pagiging fan niya kay Darren na naging runner-up sa The Voice Kids PH Season 1.

“Kasi ako ever since, you know, I saw this kid perform on TV naging fan na talaga ako ni Darren and I was very vocal about it kahit minsan bina-bash na nga ako at inaaway ng mga tao, kung anu-ano na ang tsinitsimis sa akin.

“Pero ako I didn’t let that affect me basta ako if I believe on somebody sobrang tutok ako sa kanya and look what Darren is right now?

“He’s one of the most successful singers now and most talented performers in his batch, sobrang successful. Left and right ang concert niya.

“Sumasabay siya sa mga artists na batikan na and for me to be link lagi sa kanya as his mentor and kuya, I’m happy.”

How does he deal with bashers?

“Most of the time I ignore them. Pero minsan there are days na you can’t help but reply. Minsan I reply, hindi naman pumapatol in the sense na inaaway ko. Sometime, killing them with kindness is the best thing to do it.

“Minsan yung nagba-bash sa akin, sasagutin ko, ‘Ay, ganoon po ba? Sorry po. Pasensya na po kung ganoon ang tingin ninyo sa akin.’

“Tapos minsan yung ibang fans na yung magso-sorry bigla sa akin. Sometimes it works. But sometimes may mga tao talaga na they were born to bash kasi minsan binubuksan ko yung account nila, hindi lang ako ang bina-bash nila, e. Lahat ng tao bina-bash nila. Hobby nila, so, bina-block ko na lang.

“Pero kung talagang bastusan na ano, talagang I put them in places. Very, very malicious na kasi.

“Okay, i-link ninyo ako sa ibang tao, huwag lang sa bata. Huwag ninyong i-involve yung bata kasi he’s a minor, he’s a kid, very traumatizing sa tao.

“Pero ako naman happy ako kasi si Darren wala, walang pakialam.

“Sinasabi pa nu’ng bata sa akin, ‘Hayaan mo sila, Kuya. Tara, nood tayong sine. Tara, tambay tayo,’ ganoon. So, I’m happy that this kid has a mind of his own.”

“For him kasi, I get affected for him kasi bata. So, ako, you guys, you can bash me all you want, you can link me to whoever you want, huwag lang sa bata at huwag lang bastusin ang pamilya ko, okay lang ako. Sige, mag-pista kayo sa pangba-bash diyan. Wala, e.

“I believe that these bashers who hide behind an account are cowards. People who are not happy with their lives, people na naiinggit ‘di ba? So wala. So, minsan tinatawanan na lang.”

UPCOMING CONCERT. Handa na si Jed para sa second installment ng kanyang The Iconic Concert Series: Jed Madela Sings Celine at the Music Museum this Friday, August 19. This is a spin-off from his album Iconic under Star Music.

“Noong na-release kami ng album na Iconic, parang nagisip kami na parang aside sa mall show, ano pa ang pwede nating gawin. Buti na lang yung producer, sina Dreamstar Events, nag-produce sila ng concert. So, sabi ko, what if tie-up yung concert ko sa album?”

Nagsimula ang Iconic Concert Series ni Jed featuring the hits of Mariah Carey last May.

“Bawat show ibang artist kasi ganoon ako whenever I do concerts. Gusto ko’ng bigyan ang audience ng iba, iba naman. Tulad ng una naming prinodyus na concert, yung ‘All Request’ which run since 2014 and until now nagto-tour siya ngayon,” kuwento ni Jed noong makausap namin sa presscon ng The Iconic Concert Series: Jed Madela Sings Celine.

“Actually, kababalik ko lang from Chicago for the concert. Babalik na naman ako sa September sa San Francisco and San Diego and LA.

“So, yun nga, siguro sa concept na, ah, nagiging interesting ang isang concert. Kasi anybody and everybody can just do a concert. Any artist ngayon can do a concert. Misaan sila na nga ang nagpro-produce ng concert nila. But then, it’s more of what can you give na bago sa audience.”

Intentional ba na ang pinili nila for the Iconic concert series ay international divas?

“Yes,” pagsang-ayon ni Jed.

“Well, it was the decision din of Star Music. They wanted to maximize the range of my voice. Kasi napansin namin whenever I sing uh, normal range songs, yung mga tao parang oo, they react. But siguro naging synonymous na sa Jed Madela, birit. Ganoon na kaagad.

“Oo, parang si Regine [Velasquez] na kapag kumanta ng medyo relax na kanta parang, ‘Ay, okay na yun?’ Pero kapag bumirit na. Yun na. Regine na. Parang naging signature niya.

“So, siguro ako yung sa male version na kapag bumirit na ako, yun yung pinaka-signature ko na gusto ng tao. So, when we came up with Iconic, sabi namin, sige, let’s maximize my voice. Let’s do a concept na lahat ng mga iconic female artists at saka iconic songs nila.”

Ano ang favorite niya among Celine Dion’s songs?

“Favorite song ko sa kanya, ‘Because You Loved Me.’ I’ll be doing the song and ano siya, e, very meaningful.

“Oo, kasi ako, I’m a very sensitive person when it comes to people who support me especially the ones who have been there since simula. ‘Yung mga, syempre, pamilya ko, fans ko, the members of the press who’ve been there since nagsimula ako.

“Siguro that song will be dedicated to them na nang dahil sa inyo, nandito ako.”

What did he learn while singing Celine’s song?

“Ah, napansin ko, actually, in every artist that I deal with, like noong una si Mariah. I realized that all her songs are stories of her life. Like, she writes her own song. Kung ano yung pinagdadadaan niya sa buhay niya, nalalabas sa songs niya, and somehow yung mga songs na yun nagiging kwento rin ng buhay natin na parang nilagay niya sa kanta. Parang, ‘Ay, oo nga pala. Etong song na ‘to, kwento ng buhay ko ‘to.’

“The same thing with Celine. Her songs are, compared to Mariah, iba naman ang atake niya. It’s very commercial but it also tells us a story. Story of what she’s going through, what she went through, so, basically ganoon.

“Celine is more emotional than Mariah, yes.”

“Celine is more emotional. Mariah is more of a storyteller, ganoon.”

Ano ang main challenge in interpreting Celine songs?

“Actually, challenge talaga to deal with female songs kasi you know, hindi ko pwedeng gawin yung actual pitch kasi wouldn’t sound nice.

So, yun nga, challenge sa akin, challenge sa arrangers, challenge sa musicians ko to make it different. To make it sound different but still keep the real essence of the song.

“Kasi yun nga, yun yung challenge when it comes to revivals, making revivals, doing remakes kasi syempre you have to respect the song. You have to live how it is supposed to be made, how it is supposed to be sung.

“Pero siyempre, you have to give your own version ‘di ba? Hindi mo kokopyahin lang ‘di ba? ‘Yun, ‘malaking challenge talaga siya.”

SPECIAL GUESTS. Special guests ni Jed para sa Jed Madela Sings Celine ang 5th Gen at si Denise Laurel.

Sino ang pumili sa mga guest niya?

“Well, 5th Gen has been with me for the past concerts that I’ve been doing. Mga kasama ko sila sa World Championships. They’re all champions. Individual champions din sila who came up na nag-group together. Naging grupo sila.

“So, ayun, parang sinu-suportahan ko sila because I believe so much in their talents. Ang gagaling nila in whatever way I can to promote these talents. Sinasali ko sila sa lahat ng concerts ko, mall shows. Actually, they’re also part of the album. Guests sila sa album ko.

“Aside from 5th Gen, the show will be opened by two world champions for 2016. Si JV Gacan, he’s a violinist, and then, Dos Pares. They’re a dance duo na nanalo this year sa World Championships. They’re opening it together with me.

“Pinoy sila lahat and ‘yun nga, I try to take advantage of my position to help these artists kasi in a way, I’ve been there. I remember when I was starting na, you know, ang hirap mag-break sa mainstream but I was lucky there was a Lani Misalucha who pulled me in.

“Ako yung naging guest niya lagi. There was a Regine Velasquez who would invite me. There was a Lea Salonga who would invite me. So, in a way it’s also like paying forward na since medyo naka-establish na rin ako ng pangalan. It’s my turn to give back to these new artists. Saka ano talaga, I believe talaga in their talents kasi sobrang galing nila.

“Si Denise naman I worked with her sa Your Face Sounds Familiar and for the longest time talaga magkakilala kami.

“Ninong niya ang uncle ko, so, I’ve known Denise since she was still starting pa lang. And yun nga nag-duet kami sa Your Face and then she would always say na one of her greatest dreams is do a duet with me.

“One day she just texted me, ‘Jed kapag may concert ka i-guest mo naman ako.’ Sabi ko, ‘Oo, oo naman.’

“Magaling si Denise. Happy ako na siya yung nagprisinta kasi you know, normally kami yung nagi-invite. Ako, happy ako that Denise is very much willing to be part of the show.

“Actually, na-postpone ‘to, e. This is supposed to be sa July 2 pero na-move on the 19th of August. Buti na lanng available pa rin siya. So, I’m happy na may variation ang concert na ‘to.

“Denise and I are planning to do all of Celine’s duets. Isa sa pinaka-popular na ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ and we’re also doing all of Celine’s covers. Yung mga covers niya na duets like ‘When I Fall In Love,’ ‘How Do You Keep the Music Playing.’”

JED SINGS MADONNA. May pangatlo pa bang Iconic concert series this year?

ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW

“Ah, yes. There’s going to be a third concert. The third one is going to be Madonna. Madonna naman.”

Sasayaw siya sa concert? “Hindi! Hahaha!

“It’s a big challenge for kung ano na naman ang pakulo na gagawin naming for this, sa Madonna na ‘to. Kasi ako, I do all my shows. I conceptualize but of course with the help of the director and my Tita [Annie], hands-on.

“Sobrang hands-on ako kapag concert kasi gusto ko siyang kumportable ko siyang ginagawa. Ayokong dinidiktahan ako, ‘Jed, gawin mo ‘to kasi papatok ‘to, ‘Jed, gawin o ‘yan kais uso ‘yan.’ Hindi, e.

“It’s more of gagawin ko siya kasi komprotable ako at hindi madye-jepordized ang image ko like for example hindi ko naman kayang mag-breakdance hindi ko gagawin. But then, kaya ko namang sumayaw, you know, we’ll see. We’ll see what will happen sa susunod na concert ko.”

How do you feel when people always expects that his next performance is much better than the last one?

“Nakakatakot,” diin ni Jed.

“But then sometimes it’s all a matter of how you look at it. Instead you look at it as nakakatakot, I look at it as a challenge for me creatively and as an artist na hindi ako mate-tengga sa ganito lanng na image na, ‘Jed Madela, balladeer lang ‘yan.’

“Minsan nagugulat na lang nga ang mga tao kasi minsan nagpapatawa ako sa stage, sa concerts. Na parang hindi bila nakikita sa ASAP or in other shows. Sa concert ko lang nakikiuta. So, you know, I’m happy na I have this concert to show them na maraming facets ang Jed Madela.

“Like for example sa Mariah concert, may segment talaga sa Iconic series that I impersonate, I mimic the voices of the iconic singers like Regine, Lani, Lea, Mary, Martin, Jaya, so, nagpapatawa.

“Nagugulat yung mga tao. That’s something that they don’t see everyday.”

Paano niya na-discover yung pagpapatawa niya on stage?

“Alam mo, ang weird lang kasi hindi talaga siya part ng script. It all started sa ‘All Request.’ Kasi ‘di ba ‘All Request” I would get sa fishbowl ng songs tapos kakantahin ko on the spot.

“One time may isa na sabi nila gayahin mo nga si Regine. So, doon lang nagsimula. Sabi ko, paano si Regine? On the spot, hindi ko prinaktis ang boses niya. Tapos ginawa ko, so, natawa naman ‘yung mga tao. Siguro in a way naging komportable ako na parang, ‘Ay, natatawa rin pala sila sa akin.’

“So, yun na. I became more loose, more ano on stage, parang galagaw, more relaxed, alam mo’ng natural lang. I don’t go for the script. Whatever comes up sa utak ko sasabihin ko and people laughed at doon ko na-discover siya on the spot na kaya ko palang magpatawa. So, ‘yun.

“Hindi kasi nakikita ng tao ‘yan, e. Ang image kasi na napro-project sa akin is always like seryoso, untouchable na parang, ‘Sige lang. Manood na lang tayo,’ ‘Oo, ang ganda ng boses,’ ‘Tama na,’ ‘Huwag kayong maingay’ which is not the case when it comes sa concerts. Gusto ko maingay ‘yung tao.

“Ngayon nagre-react na sila.

“It’s fun whenever we do concerts kasi I look forward to audience interaction na, ayoko kasing ano, e, upo lang kayo diyan, manood kayo at kakanta ako. Hindi pwedeng ganoon. It’s very interactive.

“Mas gusto’ng involved sila like if they want to sing, go ahead, sing along with me. If they want to go on stage and dance with me, they can. So, saka yung nagbabatuhan. Misan nagi-squeal ako tapos may sisigaw d’yan, sasagutin ko, ‘yung ganoon.

“It’s very natural at saka nakakattulong sa isang concert performer ‘yun. Nakakawala ng nerbyos.”

JED THE DIRECTOR? Bukod sa pagpapakita ng funny side niya, ano pa ang gusto niyang malaman ng audience about him?

“Well, aside from being a singer yun nga, I write my own scripts. I direct my own show, I create my own concert. Kumbaga, lahat ng mga pasabog, lahat ng mga gimiks sa concert ko, ako lahat ang nagiisip noon at syempre, nire-relay ko lang sa mga ta.

“Like for example if we have a director talaga for the show, ire-relay ko lahat sa kanya lahat ng mga ideas ko para i- implement namin kasi that’s one thing I really want to do in the near future.

“I want to direct concerts, and write scripts for my co-artists. If given a chance, hopefully, I’d like to do that.”

Going back to Iconnic concert series, may pang-apat pa ba na icon siyang gagawin after Madonna?

“Whitney Houston,” mabilis na tugon ni Jed.

“Naka-plano na lahat. Savbi naming, apat muna.

“Pero hanggang next year pa ang Iconic concert. Every other month siya.”

May gagawing ba siyang Valentine concert next year?

“Valentine is going to be, I think it’s the major Iconic concert. Lahat-lahat na, sama-sama na. There are eyeing The Theatre, Solaire. So, medyo high-end siya na concert.”
