Nar Cabico said he got emotional when Jennylyn Mercado offered to produce two songs for his first all-original album titled Eksena.
A theater actor-turned-Kapuso star, Nar recalled that it happened during one of their free days while taping My Love From The Star.
In the now defunct GMA-7 primetime series, Nar played the gay road manager and longtime friend of Steffi Chavez, a famous actress played by Jennylyn.
“Tumatambay lang kami sa bahay niya. Music lovers kasi kami. Mahilig kaming mag sound trip.
“Tapos na-mention ko, ‘Ako rin gusto ko maglabas ng songs.’ Sabi [ni Jennylyn], ‘Sige nga, parinig.’
“Naka-anim akong songs na tinugtog sa kanya. Sabi niya, ‘Ako na. Ako na ‘yan. Ako nang bahala. Ipro-produce ko na ‘yang ‘Gaga.’”
Nar said he was shocked when Jennylyn decided to become a song producer in an instant. The actress agreed to produce the songs "Gaga" and "LDR."
Talking about Jennylyn’s trust in his talent, Nar said, “Just like that. Walang kaabog-abog. Nagtatatalon-talon ako.
“Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘I love you. I love you. Talaga ba? Paulit-ulit tapos iyak lang ako ng iyak.
“Tapos nung first recording day, nandun siya, kumanta siya. Tapos nag-back-up vocals siya for me.
“So, sagad. Sagad yung suporta ni Jennylyn.”
True enough, PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) spotted Jennylyn and her boyfriend Dennis Trillo among the celebrity guests who attended Nar’s listening party at Pineapple Lab in Makati City, last Sunday night, October 1.
For his opening number, Nar performed "Gaga," his original composition inspired by a friend's love troubles.
"Maraming nagko-confide sa akin. Because when they see me, nakikita nilang successful yung relationship ko.
"Meron silang gustong advice kung paano i-solve ang mga bagay. Sa akin sila lumalapit.
"And a lot of times sinasabihan ko sila, 'Gaga, kagagahan lang 'yan.' Kaya ko sinulat yung 'Gaga' para isahan na lang."
His song "LDR," which stands for Layong 'Di Ramdam, is dedicated to VJ Capule, his partner of five years.
The two tied the knot at Guadalupe Wedding Chapel in Los Angeles, California, on August 19 this year.
Talking about his inspiration for the song "LDR," Nar explained, "Kasi nga five years ako tumira abroad. Siya naman dito.
"Yun ang pinakamabilis na sinulat kong kanta. Kasi lahat yun sa akin nanggaling. Hindi ko kailangan may marinig na kuwento."
Another relatable song that he performed during his listening party was "Sigurado Siguro," which speaks about a push-and-pull kind of relationship.
When asked to describe his music, Nar gushed that he loves to tell a story through his songs.
"Kaya yung album will be titled Eksena dahil bawat song ay eksena. Para siyang pinause na moment sa buhay. Kinut, kinuha, ginawang kanta."
In this photo, Nar can be seen performing "Baliw" together with fellow "eksenadoras" Phi Palmos, Raflesia Bravo, and Joshy Mae.
What really motivated Nar to venture into singing was the power of music to "move" and "heal" people.
He recalled how he made a tribute song for patients who are HIV positive.
"Because I used to date someone who is HIV-positive.
"Pinost ko yung song sa YouTube for World AIDS Day.
"Tapos may nag-message sa akin na anonymous face. And he’s like, 'Hi, you don’t know me but I heard your song. I am HIV-positive, and I was thinking of killing myself. But I heard your song and it felt like a really good hug. Now I'm okay.'
"So, yung simpleng pag-post na yun, 'Did I really just save a life through a song?'
"Kasi kung ganun, gagawin ko 'to. Gagawin ko 'to nang ilang beses para sa iba-ibang tao."
To date, Nar is still working on his upcoming album titled Eksena.
