Karen Davila on new show My Puhunan: "Kasi yung My Puhunan, totoo, iba siya sa mga nagawa ko. Pero alam mo, what I like about the show a lot, is ganito, unang una, sa Pilipinas akala natin ang mga mayaman ay: dapat pinanganak kang mayaman, or dapat sikat ka or artista ka or manalo ka sa lotto na hindi naman natin sila kilala."

Fresh from New York City, news anchor Karen Davila shared how her new show, My Puhunan, aims to inspire Filipinos to become more business-minded. The TV host-anchor met with the media during ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs’ press conference last August 6, 2013.

Working as a broadcaster for two decades, the journalist proudly explained how her show’s format and concept is different from what she had been used to do in the industry.

“Na-realize ko I started in 1993, 2013 na ngayon. 20 years. And it's the first time na I felt so excited over a format and a concept.

“I mean, ako I feel very proud and passionate because, it’s a show na sa totoo lang, sa tagal ko na nga sa TV, this is a show wherein the viewer is inspired and it’s informative.”

“So ako, personally, gusto ko makita ng mga viewers natin, this is different. It's rags to riches, pero yung riches na may saysay…

"We wanted a program na may matututunan yung tao.

"Yung My Puhunan, it's our way of letting them know, 'Alam niyo kahit [sa] maliit na bagay, pwede ka kumita ng pera.'"

RAGS TO RICHES.My Puhunan is a documentary-type show that features ordinary Filipino business owners who have rags-to-riches stories. The program will depict how they succeeded in their business endeavors through their perseverance and hard work. It will also be a conduit for aspiring entrepreneurs to be mentored by successful businessmen who are willing to impart their knowledge to the startups.

Its pilot episode aired last July 17 featured the rags-to-riches stories of Beverly Aquino, owner of the “Lugaw Queen” franchise.

"So kinuwento niya paano; yung kwento niya dramatic, nakakaiyak.

Another inspiring story is about Aling Trining Climaco, who completed elementary education and started out her junkshop business. This story was depicted which aired on their second episode.

MENTOR OF SUCCESS. Aside from the successful business stories, the show motivates its viewers through the mentorship of the entrepreneurs who will help out and share their recipes of success to those who aspire to have a business of their own.

“So after we interview yung mayayaman, nagmementor sila.

"Like tulad nitong si Mang Jun. P150 a day lang ang kita.

In line with the saying, “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime," the show’s aim is not to simply help out people who are in need, but to help them make it on their own.

"And merong practical tips on TV, not the whole secret siyempre nung taong yumaman, but the recipe how to do it.”

So yung 100, tatabi mong puhunan, 250 kinita mo that day.

So, yun ang maganda, may nakukuha sila from the show.”

ORDINARY PEOPLE, EXTRAORDINARY STORIES. Many people have heard of numerous rags-to-riches stories, but not everyone believes that they, too, can be that person. Thus, My Puhunan presents people who came from practically nothing and are now achieving their dreams.

“It has to be a story na maa-abot, makakarelate yung masa. We want to show people na walang pera. Talagang from scratch.

“It has to be an ordinary person, hindi siya sikat, hindi siya artista.

"It has to be yung nagsimula ng negosyo.”

MY IDOL’S PUHUNAN. It is true, Filipinos are easily attracted to celebrities they see on TV, and the journalist’s new show made sure to use it wisely. Thus, they made it an effort to feature artists who do not solely rely on their fame but also in capitalism.

Karen hindi naman stable, e, I mean, sikat ka ngayon but who knows?'"

Aside from featuring celebrities such as Jodi Sta. Maria, Empress Schuck, and RR Enriquez—who all started up their own businesses—the news correspondent still continues to look for artists who can inspire fellow Filipinos.

"I’m interested in, honestly, like Carmina Villarroel. Why? Because, okay sumikat yon dahil artista [siya], but she has like a shoe brand.

May product.”

Though she features celebrities in the show, one notion that the presenter aims to eliminate through the show is the "artista mentality" or the belief that becoming famous is needed in order to have a better life.

“We’re establishing the program as a program na ang puhunan mo sarili mo pero meron kang ginawa.

"Kaya nga we want to introduce a new inspirational [show].

KAREN DAVILA’S PUHUNAN. With her daily work as a news anchor and also as a radio broadcaster, Ms. Davila makes sure to clear her schedule so she can be hands-on in her new project.

“I shoot mga 3 to 4 times a week...at least, 3 if I’m lucky.”

“Una, I shoot yung yumaman, I let them meet, ako yung nag-iintroduce sa yumaman doon sa kanyang tutulungan, so I bring them there.”

For the show to be able to be true to its mission, Karen helps in writing the stories that will inspire audiences. And all of the stories aired are primarily to push and motivate Filipinos to run a successful business.

“I write. Kasama yung segment producer, but mostly ako yung nagli-lead write, katabi ko sila, tapos niyan, we write it together.”

“When we feature, it’s honest-to-goodness editorial judgment.

"They don’t pay. They don’t give a spot.

"Pero thank God, praise God, yung commercial load ng My Puhunan were pretty full. And they’re not related to any of the case studies.

"Yun ang nakakatuwa. They’re really products on their own that believe in the concept of the show.”

My Puhunan airs every Wednesday, 4:15 pm on ABS-CBN.
