Singers and It's Showtime's "Tawag ng Tanghalan" judges Yeng Constantino and Erik Santos gave their opinion about Regine Velasquez's "same sound" comment regarding some contestants of Idol Philippines.

In the May 5 episode of ABS-CBN's reality show, Idol hopeful Leann Ganzon played the guitar and performed her original song "Karagatan."

Although Regine said that she liked Leann's voice, Asia's Songbird remarked that her "airy" style of singing has the "same sound" with other contestants and singers, especially with fellow Idol Philippines judge, Moira dela Torre.

While Moira agreed with Regine's comment, she also took time to defend the Idol hopeful.

During Erik and Yeng's bloggers' May 10 conference for their upcoming concert ExtraordinarY held at the Cornerstone Studio, both singers were asked for their opinion regarding Regine's comment about contestants having the "same sound."

Erik pointed out that in past singing contests, people would imitate Martin Nievera and Regine's way of singing.

Erik answered, "I think nasa panahon din kasi 'yan, e.

"Pero sana lang, ako, I wish na kung ganoon man yung style nila sa kanta, pare-pareho, at least meron silang sariling style na ilalagay to make their song their own."

As for Yeng, she recalled the times when she was discouraged to join amateur singing contests because another singing style was more popular at that time.

Yeng understands why contestants choose to mimic singers whose singing styles are popular nowadays.

"I think it's very natural lalo na sa mga nagsisimula ngayon na feeling mo, this is the key to success. 'Ay, yung boses niya, dahil successful, siyempre, ganito yung ginagawa niyang style of singing, pwede akong maging successful din siguro kapag ginawa ko yung ganyang way of singing.'

"But eventually, ang isang singer, kahit ako naman guilty ako of siguro, makopya yung ibang nuances ng singers noong bata ako. Pero eventually, madedevelop mo pa yun, yung sarili mong singing style and that's a matter of time lalo na kung bata pa yung mga contenders.

"Understandable na alam mong hinahanap pa nila yung musical identity nila, pero nakaka-surprise pag meron kang nakitang young singer na sasali sa singing contest tapos ibang-iba yung tunog, iba yung itsura, iba yung dating, masasabi mo na wala pang ganito.

"Ang sarap makakita ng more of this, and yun talaga yung sana mangyari sa lahat ng singing contest natin."

ERIK AND YENG'S FIRST COLLABORATION

Erik and Yeng are set to collaborate for a concert titled ExtraordinarY. It will be held at Resorts World Manila on May 22.

This will be the first time that the two singers will share one stage for a concert, despite being singers for more than 10 years.

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) asked during the blogcon why it took a while before they collaborated for a concert.

Yeng answered, "Siguro yung pagsisimula ng idea ng concert na ito ay nanggaling sa genuine na pagkakaibigan, which is matagal din talagang na-develop.

"Ako po ay pumasok sa industriya noong ikaw [Erik] ay three years na sa industry. Kasi 15 years ka, e, 12 ako. So even at that time, hindi pa kami ganun ka-close ni Erik.

"So tumagal ng tumagal yung panahon, hanggang sa nagkakilala kami, and naging close kami.

"Doon talaga, actually, doon talaga nag-start yung concert and I'm so grateful talaga na makilala si Erik in a much deeper way, hindi lang bilang katrabaho kung hindi bilang talagang isang kaibigan.

We connect in an emotional level."

Erik believes that the friendship they built for a long time will reflect in their rapport as concert performers.

He said, "Ako kasi, bilang concert artist, nanunuod ako ng maraming concerts. Kapag may time talaga ako, nanunuod ako ng concert.

"Marami kaming pag-uusapan, hindi lang sa music, pati sa spiels namin, it will come naturally kasi alam namin kung gaano namin kakilala yung isa't isa and maipapasa namin yun sa manunuod."

According to Yeng, what makes their first collaboration exciting is that it will show a mix of genres, especially since they have different styles of singing. Yeng is more of a pop rock singer while Erik is more into pop ballad.

Even yung blend ng boses namin is really nice.

ExtraordinarY, produced by Cornerstone Concerts, is under the stage direction of John Prats and musical direction by Marc Lopez.
