In 2010, Kathryn Bernardo graduated from child actress to full-fledged teen actress.
Marking the transition was her role in the ABS-CBN prime-time series Magkaribal, where she played the young Gretchen Barretto.
Kathryn played Anna Abella, a woman who was still hopeful that she and her younger sister, Angela (Barbie Sabino) would experience a complete family once their father Manuel (James Blanco) returned from Milan.
But then, their mother Stella (Dimples Romana) lost all hope when she found out that Manuel was having an affair with fashion model Vera (Alessandra de Rossi).
Anna's struggles began when she caught Vera and Manuel together, and Stella died of a car accident. She then had to earn money to fend for her and her sister's needs.
When Angela got sick and was rushed to the hospital, Anna had no other choice but to become a prostitute to earn money.
Portraying a prostitute meant Kathryn had to do scenes that were considered daring for her age.
Back then, Kathryn was only 14 years old.
In one of the scenes, Kathryn's character Anna had to spend the night with a Japanese man.
Anna remained stoic as tears streamed down her face.
Anna later returned to the hospital only to see it on fire, leading her to believe that her sister Angela died from the incident.
In the second episode, Kathryn had to show some skin in the scene where Anna stripped off her bathrobe in front of Ronaldo Valera (Allan Paule).
Ronaldo quickly put back Anna's robe and told her that he is adopting her. This paved the way for Anna to have a better life. She changed her name to Victoria Valera.
Apart from these daring scenes, Kathryn also had to break down in tears a lot.
There was also a confrontation scene with Alessandra de Rossi where Kathryn blamed Alessandra for the death of Dimples.
Kathryn's performance in Magkaribal was noticed by the executives of ABS-CBN. She was then offered to play one of the lead roles in the remake of Mara Clara, which aired in the same year.
At the time, Kathryn had already appeared in GMA-7 as the young Marian Rivera in Endless Love. But Kathryn decided to return to ABS-CBN and accept the role of Mara.
It was Kathryn's first lead role since she joined show business in the early 2000s.
In an interview with Magandang Buhay in December 2017, Kathryn acknowledged Magkaribal as one of her biggest breaks.
But she also admitted to being scared of the role, "Natakot pa ako tanggapin iyong role kasi feeling ko, iki-kiss talaga ako.
"Kasi di ba, ibinenta niya iyong sarili niya para sa kapatid niya?
"Natakot ako kasi akala ko totoo siya, gagawin lahat."
She thanked Magkaribal director Nuel Naval for guiding her, "Noong ginawa ko, super ganda kasi noong role 'tapos mabait iyong director namin.
"Dahil sa Magkaribal kaya nagkaroon ng Mara Clara. Thankful ako na tinanggap ko iyong project na iyon kasi kung hindi dahil doon, walang Mara Clara 'tapos hindi magtutuluy-tuloy."
Fans of Kathryn Bernardo can watch her scenes in Magkaribal as ABS-CBN's online streaming platform, iWant, has started uploading full episodes of the drama series.
Starring Gretchen Barretto, Bea Alonzo, Angel Aquino, and Derek Ramsay, Magkaribal is the June offering of iWant's BETS (Best Ever TV Series) collection.
