Not a lot of people know that Andrea Torres was once a talent at ABS-CBN before becoming one of GMA-7’s prime actresses.
Andrea was15 years old when she first appeared on television via ABS-CBN’s reality show Qpids that aired in 2005.
In the show, Andrea was one of the nine ABS-CBN talents called “love princesses,” who were each on the lookout for a partner or a “love prince."
Andrea was paired with Dominic Roco in the show and their love team was dubbed as “DomRea.”
However, their love team was eliminated in the fourth elimination round.
After Qpids, Andrea did minor appearances in Maalaala Mo Kaya and ASAP.
Three years after a languishing career in the Kapamilya network, Andrea transferred to GMA-7 in 2008.
STARTING HER CAREER IN GMA-7
Her first project as a Kapuso was the magazine program Ka-Blog!, which aired every Saturday morning.
On August 9, 2008, Andrea officially joined the show as one of the hosts, together with Mico Aytona, Monica Verallo, and Lucky Mercado.
In an e-mail interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) on October 1, 2020, Andrea recalls her fondest memories in the show.
Andrea shares, “I did the craziest things on that show like go to an abandoned place for our Halloween episode and conquer my fear of heights while staying in character as Dora The Explorer. Hahaha!
“I really love the friendship and sense of family the show gave me. I remember I’d always look forward to working and seeing them in between going to school at UST.”
She considers her two-year stint in Ka-Blog! as a blessing, “I was really blessed to be part of that show. It was a great training experience for me.
"I also worked with some of the most passionate, creative, and talented people.
“It was really fun because we would experiment on different ways to present information.”
Ka-Blog! won the Best Youth-Oriented Program award at the 2009 PMPC Star Awards for TV. Internationally, the show got the runner-up award in the Youth Category of the 2009 Japan Prize for TV.
The show wrapped up its run on October 2, 2010.
After Ka-Blog!, Andrea concentrated on serious acting.
ANDREA AS AN ACTRESS
During Ka-Blog!, Andrea did minor appearances in films, one of which was Loving You, which starred starring Yasmien Kurdi and JC De Vera and produced by Regal Entertainment.
But it was in 2011 that Andrea's acting career went full swing.
GMA-7 tapped her to play a kontrabida in the afternoon series Blusang Itim, starring Kylie Padilla, Frank Magalona, and Carl Guevara.
Blusang Itim was followed by a supporting role in the 2012 prime-time series My Beloved, starring Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes.
Months later, in September 2012, Andrea received her big break in acting.
GMA-7 decided to do a modern adaptation of its 2002 drama series, Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga, starring Dingdong Dantes and Tanya Garcia.
Andrea was tapped to play Tanya’s role, while Mikael Daez played the character of Dingdong.
She recalls, “It was my launching project. I was so grateful that GMA trusted me enough with such a huge responsibility: doing the remake of a hit show and playing a dual character.”
After Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga, Andrea did a string of teleseryes where she played the lead role.
But her two other favorite shows are Alyas Robin Hood and The Better Woman.
In Alyas Robin Hood, Andrea played Venus, the leading lady of Dingdong Dantes's character.
In The Better Woman, Andrea describes her dual role—twins Jasmine and Juliet—as “the most challenging for me.”
It was also in that show where Andrea met her current boyfriend, Derek Ramsay, who played the male lead Andrew.
HAPPY BEING A KAPUSO FOR 12 YEARS
Her network transfer proved to be a good decision.
Andrea elaborates, “I’m very grateful that I belong to a network that feels very much like home to me.
“They care not just for my career but for my personal goals and well-being too.”
Andrea, without mentioning a particular event in her career, also points out that her management, GMA Artist Center, has been there for her even in “difficult times.”
She narrates, “I’ll never forget the extra time and effort my bosses and GMA Artist Center gave me in difficult times.
“It’s humbling that’s why I treasure my relationship with the people I work with and the Network. I make sure I deliver and give my best and I always want to make them proud.”
At present, Andrea has just finished her lock-in taping for GMA-7’s prime-time anthology, I Can See You.
She is one of the leads of its second offering titled The Promise, with Yasmien Kurdi, Paolo Contis, and Benjamin Alves.
The series will run from October 5 to October 9, 2020.
She will also top-bill an action series titled Sanggang Dikit with Derek. However, they cannot start its production yet because of the pandemic.
