The main villains of GMA-7’s Voltes V: Legacy have been revealed today, February 12, 2021, in 24 Oras.
Kapuso actor Martin del Rosario is set to portray the role of Prince Zardoz, the major antagonist of the story and the leader of the Boazanian force.
This confirms the guess of netizens after Martin posted one of the teasers of Voltes V: Legacy on January 14, 2021.
Actress Liezel Lopez will play the role of Zandra, who is also a member of the Boazanian empire, the lover of Prince Zardoz.
In February 2020, costume designer Noel Flores gave a sneak peek of the costume of Zandra, who is also known as Kazarin Rii in Japan.
Liezel will also be seen in GMA-7's upcoming afternoon series Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat, which will premiere on February 22, 2021.
The cast of the series have wrapped up its lock-in taping, allowing Liezel to move onward to Voltes V: Legacy.
Early this week, the names of the actors portraying the Voltes V team were unveiled.
Miguel Tanfelix is portraying the role of Steve Armstrong, the leader of the group.
Ysabel Ortega will play Jamie, Matt Lozano will portray Big Bert, Raphael Landicho will take on the role of Little Jon, and Radson Flores will be Mark.
As early as 2018, rumors were rife about GMA-7 doing an adaptation of Voltes V.
The hit Japanese anime series aired in the Philippines in the late 1970s on GMA-7.
However, in April 1979, before GMA-7 aired its finale, former President Ferdinand Marcos ordered the banning of Voltes V and other similarly themed anime series, citing "excessive violence."
But naysayers said it was due to its underlying themes of rebellion and revolution.
GMA-7 aired replays of Voltes V in 1999 and 2016.
In December 2019, the Kapuso network started airing teasers flaunting the big V.
The significance of the big V teaser was unveiled in GMA-7’s New Year Countdown 2020 when it aired a full-animated teaser of Voltes V: Legacy.
In an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in August 2020, GMA-7 creative director Aloy Adlawan said that Voltes V: Legacy is pushing through despite the pandemic.
Aloy said, “Tuluy-tuloy ang scripting and we are waiting for the additional approval ng Japan for half of the… I think na-approve na yata nila, kasi na-submit na namin iyong half of the story map, the last half of the story map.
“So tuluy-tuloy lang kami sa scripting.”
Despite the new working conditions, Aloy also said that tapings for Voltes V: Legacy are very manageable since the show will rely heavily on computer graphics.
