Dianne Medina does not mind playing supporting roles in her TV and film projects.
Since her showbiz career started in 2007 via Studio 23’s defunct satirical comedy newscast Wazzup Wazzup, Dianne has never portrayed a lead role.
In her March 29 interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) via the audio cast app Calamansi, Dianne says that this was never an issue to her.
In fact, Dianne is proud to say that she's not choosy at all when it comes to the roles that come her way.
She explains, “Kasi sa akin, there are no small roles. Sa akin, every work or every role na ibigay sa akin, it’s always a blessing kay Lord.
“Wala naman akong manager, si Lord lang talaga. So kapag may work na dumating, I take it as a blessing kasi gusto ko rin maka-bless sa ibang tao.
“Sabi ko iyon kay Lord, petition ko iyon sa Kanya na kapag may blessing na bigay sa akin, magshe-share din ako ng blessing sa iba in my own little way, sa paraan na kaya ko.
“So ako naman, happy ako basta nagwu-work ako, hindi naman ako namimili at saka siguro matanda na ako! Hahaha!”
After her stint in Wazzup Wazzup, Dianne joined the third season of the youth-oriented sitcom Let’s Go with Alex Gonzaga, Charee Pineda, Bangs Garcia, and Joem Bascon.
When Let’s Go ended in 2007, Dianne played supporting roles in teleseryes like Tiny Tony (2008), Dyosa (2008), and Kambal Sa Uma (2009). She also joined the first season of the gag show Banana Split.
In 2011, Dianne started doing projects for TV5, mainly in the prime-time series Babaeng Hampaslupa, which top-billed her Let’s Go co-star, Alex Gonzaga.
This was followed by a string of teleseryes in ABS-CBN such as Mundo Man Ay Magunaw (2012), Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw (2013), and Honesto (2013).
She also did projects with GMA-7 such as Beautiful Strangers (2015) and Little Nanay (2016). Her last regular acting project for TV was the Kapuso prime-time series My Love From The Star in 2017.
Dianne says about this, “Ang roles ko usually supporting, either kontrabida or best friend. Happy naman ako.
“I’m very contented kung anong ibinigay ni Lord sa akin, iyon ang gusto ni Lord sa akin, so tinatanggap ko siya.
“Hindi naman ako nagrereklamo na bakit hindi ako bida, dapat makuntento tayo, e. Blessed ka na nga may work ka. Iyong iba nga wala, so okay na iyon sa akin.”
WAS DIANNE EVER JEALOUS OF HER BATCHMATES?
Dianne acknowledges that she could have gotten jealous of her contemporaries when they got lead roles and their careers started to thrive.
Among her batchmates, it was Alex, Joem, Bangs, and Charee who got their early break after Let’s Go.
But her heart has no room for envy.
“Sabi ko nga, kapag sa showbiz, hindi ka puwedeng mainggit. You have to focus on your own blessing.
“Kasi siyempre, iba-iba iyan and inevitable na ikumpara mo iyong sarili mo.
“Kasi kunyari, sabay-sabay kayo nagsimula sa showbiz 'tapos mas marami siyang ganap, mas mataas na iyong talent fee niya, sobrang mahihirapan ka sa inggit, it would eat you up.
“That’s why it’s really important to focus on your own blessing at saka ang lagi kong motto in life, 'It’s not about how much you earn but how much you save.'
“So maaaring kahit mas marami siyang projects, wala iyan, huwag kang maiinggit, nasa paraan naman iyan kung paano ka mag-ipon at kung paano ka aangat sa buhay."
As Dianne is aware of the cutthroat competition in showbiz and that there are times when artists find themselves without work, she has already worked on a fallback plan.
In 2017, Dianne applied as a regular news anchor in Radio-Television Malacanang, which owns the TV station PTV-4.
“So doon ako nag-apply sa PTV-4 as news anchor para may passive income ako, employed ako doon, e. May income ako every month ‘tapos kapag tatawagan ako for acting, teleserye, madali lang magpaalam.
“At least, may passive income ako unlike kung iyong showbiz iyong gagawin kong bread and butter ko na talagang solely iyon lang, mahirap di ba?
“So sometimes, you just have to make wise decisions and really accept kung ano lang talaga iyong ibinigay sa iyo ni Lord.”
Dianne does not currently have an acting project as she recently gave birth to her first baby with husband Rodjun Cruz.
Their son Joaquin was born in September 2020.
