Liezel Garcia is the first Star Scholar of PDA Season 2

Ma. Liezel Garcia is named the first Star Scholar of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 during the live gala night held earlier tonight, June 21.

When Ma. Liezel Garciasang her choice piece "Dance with my Father," you could hear the yearning for her own father, whom she last saw when she was still a Grade 1 student. This sincerity, coupled with her excellent vocal skills, allowed her to get a score of 8.96 (out of a perfect 10). This made The Pride of Puerto Galera as the first Star Scholar of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2.

The competition was marked by some tension when it was reported that Chivas Anton Malunda (The Student Husband) suddenly became unconscious earlier this week. He was rushed to the hospital and reduced his rehearsal time before the gala night held at the PDA Hall earlier tonight, June 21. Doctors explained that he suffered from hyperventilation but this did not prevent him from giving a lively performance of the song "After the Loving." This love song was one of the songs that didn't quite fit the theme of the night which was dedicated to the fathers of the scholars.

Another song that oddly stood out was the song "Laklak" that was performed by The Boy Wonder Christian Alvear. When asked why he chose this song, the 25-year old vertically challenged singer said that this was because he wanted to remind his father not to repeat the mistakes that he did in the past.

For the Father's Day tribute of the scholars, pictures of their fathers were flashed on the big screen behind them as they performed for the audience and the judges. Renowned composer Louie Ocampo is the resident judge who will constantly be on the panel of judges while the two other slots will be occupied by guest judges. For the first gala night of PDA Season 2, talent manager Girlie Rodis and accomplished singer Hajji Alejandro gave their observations about the PDA scholars.

For gaining the top score, the Star Scholar was given the chance to fulfill her small dream and Liezel asked that she be able to give a cellphone for her aunt. The two other scholars who were in the Top 3 slots tonight were Miguel Mendoza, who sang "A House is Not a Home" and Van Louelle Pojas who delighted the audience with his rendition of "I Can't Fight this Feeling."

The PDA scholars all gave their best earlier tonight with their own choice songs suited to the tribute to fathers everywhere. Laarni Losala sang "In Your Eyes," Iñaki" Ignacio Ting chose the Carpenters hit "Close To You," and Jet Singh received compliments from Hajji for singing "Skylight Pigeon" very clearly. The other singers chose "Moon River" (Bea Muñoz), "Papa Can You Hear Me" (Apple Abarquez), "Kailangan Kita" (Sen Nichols), and the Yeng Constantino song "Salamat" (Sheng Belmonte). The last batch of singers performed "Father and Son" (Ross Dio), "You'll Never Walk Alone" (Jay Bogayan), and "Thanks to You" (Bunny Malunda, the wife of Chivas).

Cris, The Singing Interior Designer, was forced to change her choice piece because of a challenge but the sexy ditty that was given to her suited her very well, according to Louie Ocampo.

Tomorrow, June 22, viewers will know the first batch of probationary scholars who just might be asked to leave the Academy. Stay tuned from Monday to Friday to Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 Uberture, 5:30 PM, and Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 Primetime, after My Girl on ABS-CBN.
