South Korean balladeer Yohan Hwang is I Love OPM’s first Touristar.
He was able to beat fellow touristars Ryan "the American Hearthrob" Gallagher, Korean Pop Group J Morning and Pakistani rocker Harris Dio Smith.
I Love OPM, The Grand Destination--a singing contest where foreign contestants sing original Filipino songs--held its finale last April 23 at Resorts World Manila.
Hwang garnered the highest of votes from the public as well as from judges Martin Nievera, Lani Misalucha, and Toni Gonzaga.
Hwang, who sang Ang Probinsyano’s theme song "Wag Ka Nang Umiyak" received 32.82% of the votes.
Ryan Gallagher, who sang Gary V’s "Narito," received 23.27% of the votes.
Also hailing from South Korea, musical group J Morning received 23.42% of the votes when they sang Freddie Aguilar’s “Bulag, Pipi at Bingi.”
Harris Dio Smith sang The Dawn’s "Salamat" and received 20.50% of the votes.
Judge Toni Gonzaga praised Hwang’s performance and described it as heartfelt.
“Nagpatunay ka ngayong gabi. Yung binigay mong performance ramdam na ramdam mo yung bawat salitang bnigkas mo. Nararamdaman ko. Yes Yohan. I feel you.”
Lani Misalucha described the 20-year-old La Salle student by saying:
“Ginulat mo talaga kami. Nag-level up ka. May pinatunayan ka sa aming lahat. Di ka lang heartthrob: isa kang singing heartthrob.”
Martin Nievera agreed with Misalucha and confirmed the maturity present in Hwang’s voice.
“In the last three months, you have matured. You proved to us tonight: Yohan loves OPM! Good job!”
As I Love OPM’s Grand Touristar, Yohan Hwang received a recording contract with Star Music, a Cebu vacation package, and a cash prize of P2 million.
The grand finals dubbed as “The Grand Destination,” hosted by Anne Curtis with Eric Nicolas, was also graced by Pinoy music icons Randy Santiago, Hajji Alejandro, and Arnel Pineda as well as teen heartthrob James Reid.
