The mystery behind the name of Hodor was revealed on Game of Thrones Season 6's episode 5 titled "The Door."
Hodor (played by Kristian Nairn) proved himself a loyal friend until the end when he sacrificed himself in order to save Bran (played by Isaac Hempstead Wright).
The gentle giant could only speak one word, Hodor, and it turned out to be short for "Hold the door."
In a tense battle between the White Walkers, Hodor is tasked to hold a door shut while Meera (Ellie Kendrick) rushes Bran to safety.
His character (whose younger version was played by Sam Coleman) repeatedly says Hold the door, which is contracted to Hold door and finally becomes Hodor.
Kristian Nairn, the actor who has played Hodor since Season 1, had this to say about his death on Game of Thrones:
Hodor. Thank you guys, for the love,+ know that I love you back.I never dreamt of all this.Huge props to @SamColemanActor for an amazing job— Kristian Nairn (@KristianNairn) May 23, 2016
You guys, seriously :))) thank you so much. Sad and happy simultaneously. #HoldTheDoor— Kristian Nairn (@KristianNairn) May 24, 2016
In a video from HBO, Kristian said about his death, "When I got the script for Season 6, although I got the call and knew what was going to happen to Hodor...It was a really difficult scene to read coz I love Hodor, I love him to death...I like that he sacrificed himself for his friends. It feels very true to Hodor for me.
"I'm just glad I got so far. With so many people dying, I think I did quite well to get to Season 6."
Sam Coleman, the actor who played young Hodor, expressed his admiration for his older counterpart.
Shoutout to @KristianNairn for bringing to life the most lovable character in TV history. 'Twas a pleasure being mini-me to such brilliance.— Sam Coleman (@SamColemanActor) May 23, 2016
The heartbreaking episode also spawned numerous memes that flooded the Internet.
