Brillante Mendoza says TV5 told him: "Di kami makikipag-compete ng ratings."

Ina Raymundo stars in the first Brillante Mendoza-directed show on TV5 titled Tsinoy.

"I signed a three project with TV5. One is monthly film made for television, ang pangalan niya ay Brillante Mendoza Presents. These are films shots in different parts of the country, parang intertwined with the local festivities.

"Halimbawa the Chinese New Year in Binondo for the first episode in January, for February the Penagbenga in Baguio, March Mt. Makiling, school in Mt. Makiling.

"We also have Vigan stories, the Davao stories, the Cebu stories, iba-ibang kuwento ito every month. It’s a film made for television every month. This gonna be launch this January.

“On February naman, a weekly series, it’s an action drama about an illegal drug case that will focus on different characters, pushers, drug users, iba-iba.  Yung first episode it will stars different actors. Derek [Ramsay] is one, of course yung kanilang pool of talents."

Ang title ng second project ay Amo.

“Yung third project, Its called the Brillante Mendoza  New Breed. These are films that will be shot and directed by new breed of filmmakers under my supervision. Mga new film makers ito who hadn’t done films yet na gagawa sila ng film for TV5 at the same time the major goal is for these films to go to major festivals abroad. After the screening with the festivals in abroad, TV5 will release them in the Philippines.”

The relationship of a young Tsinoy student, an ardent wushi (lion dance) performer, and his pure Chinese father is strained when the young man fails to graduate from school as expected. The young man makes amends during his father’s recovery period after a medical operation, and as he spends time with his father at the hospital, he defines the kind of relationship he has with his father’s first family and finally acknowledges his role as the son favored over the wayward eldest son to take over the business that is keeping both families alive.

“Like I’ve said kanina, ang proseso is like doing a film also, mas mahirap siya. Ayokong isipin yung limits  kasi yung content naman  yung puwedeng ipalabas sa TV at the same time it’s not gonna be concentrated dun sa actors, concentration on the actors is not gonna be like that, it’s gonna be on the content.

“They didn’t  have to convince me hard, ang sabi lang nila sa akin, 'Direk, gusto naming magkaroon ng ibang image and we want you to be our partner of this new image and the image we want to have now is the home for alternative cinema. We want to give you your full creative freedom with your project whatever you wanted to do for us."

"With that proposal, ano pa ang aayawan mo di ba? Nung sinabi na nila yung magic word na we will not compromise your artistry, your creativity at the same time we want this image.

“It’s gonna be a home for independent artists and independent cinema. That’s their new trust now, unlike before na alam naman natin somehow they are competing with two major networks, but now di na sila ganun. They decided to focus and they decided to have identity of their own which is alternative.”

"They have of course the show of news, sports dahil nandiyan si Coach [Chot Reyes] pero at the same time kailangang magkaroon ng content.

"I will be very busy kasi I will focus on the TV work so I won’t have any film that will be shown on 2017.

“At the moment di pa ako sure.
