Sunshine Dizon and Ryza Cenon's confrontation scenes in the afternoon drama Ika-6 Na Utos are currently the new source of memes and funny tweets on social media.
Who could forget the nerf gun and the gym fight scene between Emma (Sunshine) and Georgia (Ryza)?
While there are bashers, other viewers are curious about the way Sunshine and Ryza shoot these intense, campy, yet entertaining fight scenes.
Instead of just airing for six weeks, GMA-7 extended the show which is currently on its seventh month on the air.
During a recent visit to the set of Ika-6 Na Utos, Sunshine told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other reporters some interesting trivia about the fight scenes seen in this top-rating afternoon drama.
Here are 6 interesting facts about the intense catfight scenes shown in Ika-6 Na Utos:
1. Sunshine Dizon actually developed a muscle tear because of the show.
When PEP asked Sunshine what is the hardest confrontation scene she taped for the show, she answered: "To be honest, lahat."
Apparently, this is because Sunshine has spondylosis on her neck and lower back. According to the website Spine-health, it is a term referring to a type of spinal degeneration.
The 33-year-old actress also developed a muscle tear on her arm because of the Kapuso show.
"Feeling ko, nagstart siya doon sa warehouse scene, yung kinulong ako dati ni Ryza, unang-una kasi doon na siya nagstart sumakit tapos parang binalewala ko siya for a month tapos parang lalo na siyang sumakit."
This somehow affected her performance, but as they say, the show must go on!
She recounted, "Itong recent lang na fight scene namin na parang hinahatak ko siya, hindi ko siya mahatak with one hand kasi masakit talaga yung balikat. So, it's actually very hard for me pero maganda naman yung lumalabas so okay pa din.
"At saka kunyari, bawal ako tumakbo pero tumatakbo pa rin ako. Marami akong bawal pero ginagawa ko pa rin."
The show's production staff, including former action star Baldo Marro who acts as their stunt director, takes extra care of Sunshine.
"It's very tasking pero pag talagang alam naman na delikado, inaayos naman ni Tatay Baldo. Sinasabi ko din naman kung ano lang din yung kaya ko at yung di ko talaga kaya," says the 33-year-old actress.
2. Sunshine believes the writers make a conscious effort to inject funny moments in catfight scenes.
Ika-6 Na Utos earned a big following mainly because of its funny confrontation scenes.
As mentioned earlier, the nerf gun and gym fight scenes even became sources of memes.
The show also received negative comments from some netizens, who think that these scenes are absurd and ridiculous.
However, Sunshine said that Baldo and the writers really come up with situations that veer away from the usual sampalan and sabunutan scenes seen in other teleseryes.
She pointed out, "Yung fight scenes namin, talagang pinag-iisipan niya na pasabog dapat parati. At saka minsan din, ginagawa namin sa fight scenes, hindi naman puro violence din, may comic side din like yung baril, at saka yung gym, yung mga ganun di ba?
"Hindi mo alam kung mabubuwisit ka ba o matatawa ka sa kanila. Parang noong elevator scene, pag-akyat, pagdating sa dulo, hinampas ng cake sa mukha na parang saan nanggaling yung cake!"
Is it a conscious effort for the team to inject comedic elements in intense scenes?
Sunshine answered, "I think so. I think the writers are doing that to make the show a little lighter or baka yun nga yung iniinject nila na quirkiness, or I don’t know kung sinasadya ba nila yun or kung nagkataon lang.
"Pero it's a brilliant idea because it's working. Itong mga bago naman, may recent fight scene kami na may pintura naman. Tapos meron din nagbatuhan kami ng balut!"
The balut fight scene, which aired last June 24, allowed Ika-6 Na Utos to become viral online.
3. How do Sunshine, Ryza and other cast members shoot their fight scenes?
According to Sunshine, their fight scenes are usually done in two takes by director Laurice Guillen.
"Usually dalawa. Ang style kasi nila Direk, we do a master shot, wide shot and then we do the close-ups. So umuulit lang yung scene depende kung ano yung close-ups."
Sunshine believes that it is an advantage for Ryza that she is a dancer since their fight scenes follow strict, precise steps similar to a dance.
"I think siguro si Ryza, in fairness to Ryza, kasi di ba she's a dancer also. Usually, ang fight scene kasi, it's actually a dance with numbers, may numero lahat yun.
"Kunyari nagsabunutan kami, 1 2 3 4, bitaw, sampal. May steps siya."
4. No ad libs in fight scenes.
As Sunshine described it, they follow the choreography of the fight scenes very precisely.
For this reason, they cannot do ad libs in their fight scenes nor make mistakes when it comes to counting.
Sunshine recalled one time when this happened. "Actually, there was a scene before na parang nagkatamaan kami ni Ryza kasi hindi siya nakasunod dun sa numero, nangyari yun.
"Okay naman, chill lang, tapos kinausap lang siya ni Direk Baldo na 'O beh, huwag mo kalimutan yung numero kasi pag ganyan magkakasakitan talaga kayo.'
"So the numbers are very important. Sobrang to the t yun."
Sunshine also discussed how they are instructed regarding their stunts in the fight scenes.
She said, "Ngayon kasi ang nangyayari, si Direk Baldo will choreograph it, and then si Direk Baldo mismo yung gagawa with his parang fight instructor assistant.
"Tapos sasabihin ni Tatay, 'O Shine, ako si Emma.' Yun ang mas nakakatawa kapag sila yung gumagawa kasi pareho silang lalaki.
"At saka siyempre stuntman, talagang gugulong-gulong! Tapos parang ako, ''Tay medyo parang di ko kaya yun. Tay, pwede yung kabilang kamay gamitin ko.'
"Pero to the t yun, sinusunod namin yun."
5. Sunshine finds it harder to do fight scenes in Ika-6 Na Utos than those in Encantadia.
Before engaging in intense "bakbakan" scenes with Ryza, Sunshine used to be known for her fight scenes in the now defunct fantasy series Encantadia.
In the 2005 version, she played Pirena, the keeper of the fire gem. In the 2016 requel, she played Adhara, the frustrated wannabe queen of Lireo.
When asked if Encantadia's fight scenes were harder than that of Ika-6 Na Utos, Sunshine answered, "Well, yes and no."
She pointed out the differences of the two shows: "Difference kasi nila, sa Enca kasi we're using weapons. Like itong bagong Enca, I was using a very big sword and a staff and hindi siya magaan, mabigat siya, sobrang bigat.
"Sabi nga nila, yung staff ko yung pinaka mabigat kasi nakailang tamaan na yun ng sword, lahat nasisira niya. Yung akin buhay pa."
However, according to her, what makes Ika-6 Na Utos harder to do are the emotions that she need to bring out while doing a fight scene.
She explained, "Dito kasi, we use our whole body, plus the emotions din, heightened emotions.
"Minsan pag nagpafight scene ka, dumadialogue ka, at saka siyempre, yung galit talagang ilalabas mo with all the feelings. Yun lang siguro.
"Sa Enca naman kasi, nakakapagod lang pero de numero din naman, delikado din.
"Iba din kasi pag naghalo na yung emotions and yung dialogue, parang feeling ko mas taxing pa rin ito [Ika-6 Na Utos], mas nakakapagod pa rin ito.
"Kasi yun na lang hindi kayo magsampalan, linya na lang, e. Hindi naman simple lang yung linya and personally I don’t want to waste the lines how it is written.
"Kailangan bigyan mo talaga ng buhay yun. Nakakapagod emotionally."
6. Sunshine is so prepared for her physically-demanding scenes that she even bought her own portable bathroom!
Aside from doing fight scenes, Sunshine did a lot of physically-challenging sequences for the show.
One instance was when she had to lie down in a cemetery while raining after the death of her child on the show named Austin.
"May mga drama scenes that would entail na kunyari naulanan, like yung namatay si Austin, pinahiga nila ako doon sa sementeryo with all the putik na umuulan.
"Parang, okay saan tayo maliligo? [Sabi sa akin,] 'Madam, wala po, diyan na lang kayo sa portalet maliligo.' Okay, masikip.
"E, sometimes ganun, hindi mo talaga maiwasan kasi wala talagang maliliguan.
"In fairness naman to my staff, mga tao ko dito, 'Madam, pinag-init ko kayo ng tubig.'"
For this reason, Sunshine was prompted to buy her own portable bathroom!
She continued, "So parang narealize ko, sabi ko sa PA ko, bili na kaya tayo ng liguan para pag emergency. So umorder ako ng liguan! Yung pang camping!
"Para lang siyang bilog na pag inopen mo siya, magkakasya na yung isang tao. Tapos yung balde naman parang collapsible na dalawang litrong tubig. Bumili na rin ako ng CR ko!"
She admitted, "Honestly, you have to be prepared. Minsan sasabihin lang nila kahit naman alam mo sa script na meron, minsan hindi mo alam kung kailan nila titirahin.
"Kunyari, example, yung last taping, hindi ako prepared na magbubuhusan pala kami ng tsokolate at buko pandan.
"Tapos bigla kong narealize na may dala ba tayong panligo? May tuwalya ka naman at saka underwear. Buti may banyo doon sa location. So you always have to be prepared."
