Rocco Nacino and Sanya Lopez reunite on TV in their first post-Encantadia project, the daytime soap, Haplos, and they prove that the chemistry that they’ve built in the GMA-7 fantasy series is no fluke.
Just like in Encantadia, where Sanya played Hara Danaya and Rocco, Mashna Aquil—hence the birth of the DanQuil love team that has evolved into RocSan—the good-looking pair bring in the kilig in Haplos.
In the pilot episode of Haplos, which was aired yesterday afternoon, July 10, back stories and potential story developments were told in a brisk and engaging manner.
The opening scene showed the characters of Sanya Lopez and Thea Tolentino battling it out in an open field, with Sanya representing what is good against Thea’s evil side. This proved to be an effective transition for Encantadia fans who are used to seeing Sanya in something that involves magic and action.
Sanya plays Angela Alonzo, the only child of businessman Renato Alonzo (Emilio Garcia) and his wife Minda Alonzo (Patricia Javier), who studies to be a physical therapist. Her charmed life is set to be shattered with her discovery of her healing power and her stepsister Lucille (Thea Tolentino), who has the opposite power to destroy.
In the pilot episode, it was hinted that Angela got her healing power from her paternal grandmother Biring (Celia Rodriguez), who lived in their family home when she was a child. But Angela’s father Renato discouraged her from believing in her Lola Biring’s stories of being able to heal, so Lola Biring left.
When Angela came of age, her healing power started manifesting. One time, she helped an injured goat get back on its feet by touching and talking to it. Another time, she massaged her mother Minda’s head and the pain in Minda’s head vanished.
Her parents, though, dismissed those incidents as unconnected from the gift of healing that Lola Biring has passed on to Angela.
At the other end of the spectrum, Lucille Bermudez was told by a fortuneteller that she knew witchcraft. But she’s more concerned to rise above from the impoverished life that she shares with her mother Mercedes (Francine Prieto), who’s desperately looking for the man who got her pregnant with Lucille.
One night, Mercedes spotted Renato in a party. Mercedes confronted Renato, who came with his wife Minda, and made him remember the night they shared together long before Renato met Minda.
Renato denied knowing Mercedes and he left the party with Minda. Mercedes got his number from her date, who happened to know Renato. Then Mercedes called Renato’s home number.
On that same night of the party, Renato and Minda’s daughter Angela took a swim in their pool and was visited by her boyfriend Gerald (Rocco Nacino).
The secret lovers give each other meaningful looks in the presence of her father, who wants his daughter to first earn her college degree before having a boyfriend. When left alone, though, they aren’t shy to show their amorous feelings and express their love by kissing on the lips.
The pilot episode ended with flashes of future scenes: Lucille appearing at the Alonzo residence and later gate-crashing Angela’s birthday party; Angela and Gerald discussing if they should tell her parents about their relationship; and Angela meeting a man (Pancho Magno) asking for road directions but ends up kissing her.
