GMA-7 is set to air its own adaptation of the 2016 hit Korean drama Descendants of the Sun this 2018.
This was confirmed by GMA Senior Vice President for Entertainment Lilybeth Rasonable in an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) during the Christmas Party for the Press.
Rasonable said, "Yes, we bought it and like My Love From The Star, we're going to do an adaptation."
My Love From The Star is another popular Korean drama that GMA-7 adapted for Philippine television. Top-billed by Jennylyn Mercado and Gil Cuerva, it aired in the second quarter of 2017.
As of this writing, the Kapuso lady executive said that they are still in the preparation stage for the adaptation.
She continued, "We have to prepare for it. It's very grand.
"Mukhang simple lang yung story pero the settings, how they are situated, medyo kailangang paghandaan, pag isipan, pati casting."
In terms of the cast members, Rasonable said that they are yet to choose the actors who will bring life to the characters of the Korean drama.
PEP.ph then asked if the rumors are true that Alden Richards will be playing the lead role of Captain Yoo Si-jin, portrayed by Korean actor Song Joong-ki.
She answered, "Well, I'm not saying that hindi pwede kay Alden kasi sa totoo lang, bagay na bagay din siya.
"Kung siya, I'll be very happy. But now, wala pang cast."
Prior to the adaptation, GMA-7 already aired a dubbed version of Descendants of the Sun on its prime-time block in 2016.
PRIME-TIME PERFORMANCE. Rasonable also pointed out that the network is very happy with the strong performance of GMA-7's prime-time block in 2017, especially the shows that aired during the last quarter of the year.
She specifically mentioned the shows Super Ma'am starring Marian Rivera, and My Korean Jagiya starring Heart Evangelista.
"Ang dami naming magagandang shows na nilabas and on prime-time, we had the return of Alyas Robin Hood, and of course, we're also happy yung pagbabalik ni Marian sa Super Ma'am.
"I think she's getting good reviews for it kasi ang galing naman talaga niya sa action.
"She's still yung Darna namin noon and maganda yung example na pinapakita niya as a teacher, so we're happy with that."
It may be recalled that in 2009, Marian top-billed her own version of Darna, which also enjoyed high ratings when it was still airing.
As for My Korean Jagiya, Rasonable takes pride in bringing in Korean actors Alexander Lee and Andy Ryu.
"I'm also very proud of My Korean Jagiya because for me, it's groundbreaking because first time na may Korean actors talaga, and nag-jell [with us].
"We're so very happy with Alexander because he's so Pinoy na now. We love him, he's so nice and so professional and everybody in that set, it's a happy set. It has been a happy prime-time for us."
Super Ma'am and My Korean Jagiya are expected to conclude their run in the first quarter of 2018.
My Korean Jagiya is now down to its last two weeks on the air.
Two new Kapuso prime-time shows are set to be launched this January: The One That Got Away starring Lovi Poe, Max Collins, Rhian Ramos, and Dennis Trillo; and Sherlock Jr. featuring Gabbi Garcia and Ruru Madrid.
