Glaiza de Castro as Pirena, Princess Punzalan as Selina, and Aiko Melendez as Emilia are three of the kontrabida moms that viewers loved to hate on television.
Mothers aren't always depicted on television to be perfect, endearing moms.
There are times when mothers become the villains in teleseryes.
At the end of each series, however, the core of these characters remained: being a mother to their children.
In fact, some of their villainous traits even make them relatable since they remind viewers that no one is perfect, and everyone is capable of making mistakes and learning from it.
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) lists down 15 kontrabida moms whom we love to hate while watching teleseryes:
Selina Matias (Mula Sa Puso) Portrayed by: Princess Punzalan (1997), Eula Valdes (2011)
Dubbed as the Philippines's version of Tormentor because of her nine lives, Selina Matias has always been known as the most evil kontrabida who made the life of the protagonist Via (Claudine Barretto/Lauren Young) miserable.
Selina has a daughter to her husband Ysmael (Efren Reyes, Jr./DJ Durano) named Nicole (Anna Larrucea/Sue Ramirez).
WHY WE HATE HER: Calling Selina evil is actually an understatement. In both installments. She plotted several ways to kill Via and get the riches of the Pereiras. The most popular one was when she planted a bomb inside a bus to kill Via.
WHY WE LOVE HER: Just like any mother, Selina would do everything for her child. In the 1997 version, Selina was so devastated when she saw the lifeless body of Nicole that she opened up her casket to hug her daughter for the last time. In the 2011 version, Selina got her biggest karma when Nicole was inside the bus that she blew up. When Selina learned about this, she immediately rushed inside the burning bus and sacrificed her life just to be with her daughter.
Pirena is the eldest among the four Sang'gres of Lireo, and the keeper of the fire gem. She was able to conceive her child Mira (Yasmien Kurdi/Kate Valdez) and exchange her with the daughter of Amihan (Iza Calzado/Kylie Padilla).
WHY WE HATE HER: She has always been jealous of her sister to the point that she actually had a child just to use for her revenge, aside that she wasn't a good daughter because of her violent, rebellious ways.
WHY WE LOVE HER: Despite exchanging her child for Amihan's daughter, Pirena still showed unconditional love for Mira, and did everything to win her love back after the secret was revealed. Since then, Pirena gave all her love to Mira. In the 2016 version, Pirena even sacrificed herself and was punished after she violated a rule to save Mira's life.
Emilia is the only daughter of the evil mayor Julio Ardiente (Tirso Cruz III). She has a son with her husband Raul (Wendell Ramos), who is Arnaldo (RK Bagatsing).
WHY WE HATE HER: She is a corrupt public official, and she doesn't give chances to anyone who wronged her. Instead, Emilia resorts to killing all her enemies. She manifests her love for Arnaldo by being overly protective of him, which started her intense rivalry with Lily (Maja Salvador).
WHY WE LOVE HER: She's willing to sacrifice for Arnaldo's sake and give him what he wants, even if it means forcing herself to want Lily and learn to like her.
