Ever wonder why Regine Velasquez rarely appears on singing talent search shows?
In an interview during a set visit on The Clash recently, PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainement Portal) and other reporters asked Asia’s Songbird why she always hosts such programs but is never seated as one of the judges.
She answered, “Actually, hindi ako masyadong nagdya-judge. Ayaw kong mag-judge. Hindi ako magaling mag-judge.”
She explained that she couldn’t stop herself from reacting when she hears a mistake during a contestant’s performance.
The singer-actress further explained that it must be because of her characteristic as a singer.
“Kasi kami, most singers, are called relative pitch,” she said.
Then, she turned to one of The Clash’s judges, Lani Misalucha, and said, “Hindi tayo perfect pitch. Si Lea lang.”
Regine was referring to their fellow Pinoy singer, Lea Salonga.
She continued, “Ako, relative pitch lang ako, nakakabisado yung nota.
“Kahit sa pagtulog mo, alam mo yung nota, ganun ang relative pitch.
“Perfect pitch yung kahit hindi ka na nakikinig, alam mo na yun ang tamang nota.
“Kami nakakabisado lang namin.”
Prior to The Clash, Regine has hosted several singing talent search show such as Star for a Night (2002), Search for a Star (2003), and Pinoy Pop Superstar (2004).
MISTAKES ARE NORMAL
Regine believes aspiring contestants should not be discouraged when they made a mistake during a live performance.
“Yung actually pagpa-flat, normal 'yon. Kasi, minsan your adrenaline...
“It also happens when you over sing,” she said.
When it happens, Regine advises young singers to just continue practicing and hone their talent.
She further said, “Mistakes are inevitable because you sing live. It really happens, but you learn from the mistakes that you make over the years.
“But even kami, who's been singing all our lives, we still make mistakes.
“Ganun talaga 'yon, hindi naman kami perfect, hindi kami recording lang.
“Mali yung lyrics, mali yung tono, kaya nga inaaral mo lahat, e.”
