ABS-CBN’s musical-drama series iDOL aired its finale last night, October 22, 2010. When the Aliw Awards Entertainer of the Year was interviewed at the Manila Hotel last October 18, lead star Sarah Geronimo admitted that the primetime offering trailed behind in the ratings game.

"Siyempre nakakalungkot na malaman na mababa nga yung ratings," she told the press that night. "Pero may dahilan naman sa lahat ng bagay, kung bakit gano’n ang pagtanggap ng mga tao. At hindi namin sila masisisi kasi bago ...Nabigla rin yung mga tao sa concept ng project. At hindi rin gano’n kasi kahaba yung time ng preparation ng proyekto. Basta nagsama-sama na lahat. Naghalo-halo na.

"Alam ko naman yung totoo. Totoo naman yun," she continued. "Mababa naman talaga yung ratings namin, at tinatanggap ko ho yun ng buong-buo," she acknowledged, adding that the unforeseen cancellation deeply saddened her.

"Sana maging lesson na rin ’yan sa atin... ako, sa akin, sa management, sa aming lahat, na magkaroon ng mahabang preparasyon, at talagang pag-aralan mabuti yung proyekto, para mas maging entertaining tayo sa mga televiewers," she reflected. iDOL ran for two chapters, including 35 episodes and several OPM song covers.

OTHER REASONS. But the decline in ratings wasn’t the only cause for cancellation, explained Sarah. The availability of iDOL’s stars, including herself, also proved to be a formidable challenge to the production.

"Kasi kasabay ho ito ng Philippine tour ko, so every Thursday and Friday wala ho ako," she reasoned. "Nagko-concert ako sa mga probinsya, tapos may mga out of the country shows pa. Ganun din [ka-busy] sina Sam [Milby] and Coco [Martin]. So yun nga, nagkaroon ng conflict do’n sa schedule ng mga artista. At marami pang bagay.

"Ganun talaga. May mga dahilan kung bakit kailangan tapusin agad yung show," she added. "Nakakalungkot man, gusto pa po namin i-extend pero yun nga. May mga kailangan ayusin."

Sarah then expressed her gratitude for the support given to her by loyal iDOL followers. "Napakalaki ho ng pasasalamat namin sa televiewers dahil binigyan po nila kami ng pagkakataon na umere kami, at patuloy pa ring sumuporta at nanonood nung show at nakaka-appreciate naman ng mga ginagawan namin," said the multi-awarded singer with a smile. "Maraming salamat po!"

Since iDOL ended three weeks earlier than planned, what will she miss most about the show?

"Nakakalungkot talaga kasi ngayon pa lang nagsisimula yung magandang friendship namin ng mga co-actors ko. At natutuwa rin ako na sa last week niya, talagang ang effort ng writer namin, pinapaganda ng husto!" she said with a laugh. "Even yung transition ng kanta, yung pagpumapasok yung kanta, maganda na. Smooth na kumbaga. Sayang lang talaga."

Biboy Arboleda, Advertising and Promotions Head of iDOL explained why the show was cut short in a press release provided by the corporate communications department of ABS-CBN: "As much as we want to prolong the show but due to constraints in production, schedules & difficulty in daily tapings, Idol will not able to fulfill its 10-13 week term on air. Mahirap magpaalam lalo pa at naging malapit na sa mga puso natin ang Idol. Patuloy na lang po nating suportahan ang Idol hanggang sa huli nitong linggo."

REUNION WITH JOHN LLOYD CRUZ? Now that iDOL has ended, is the Box Office Queen finally ready to team up once again with her A Very Special Love and You Changed My Life co-star John Lloyd Cruz?

"Ako lagi kong sinasabi, sa tamang panahon ho," she answered. "Sana yung tamang panahon na ’yon, kilala n’yo pa rin ako! Pero may rason ang lahat ng bagay kung bakit hindi pa natutuloy ngayon."

In line with this, Sarah slammed rumors of her having a falling-out with the young actor. "Naku! Lagi nga kaming nagkakantiyawan no’n, ’e!" she told reporters, adding that her friendship with John Lloyd remains intact.
