Sikat na sikat sa Amerika ang TV show na Hannah Montana na napapanood sa Disney Channel at pinagbibidahan ni Miley Cyrus, anak ng dating country singer na si Billy Ray Cyrus. Lingid sa kaalaman ng marami, isa sa cast member ng Hannah Montana ay may dugong Pinoy—si Anna Maria Perez de Tagle.
Seventeen years old na si Anna Maria at ipinanganak siya sa San Jose, California. Parehong Filipino ang mga magulang niya na nag-migrate sa U.S. bago pa man isilang si Anna Maria.
Sa Hannah Montana ay ginagampanan ni Anna Maria ang role ni Ashley Dewitt, ang isa sa mga bullies ni Hannah. Bukod sa naturang Disney show ay napanood din si Anna Maria sa Disney original movie na Camp Rock, kung saan nakasama niya ang sikat ngayon na Jonas Brothers. Nakasama rin siya sa TV show na Cake TV.
Noong 13 years old pa lang si Anna Maria ay nagpadala siya ng audition tape sa Disney. Kahit na wala siyang showbiz background, naglakas-loob siyang mag-audition para sa role ni Hannah or Lily sa sisimulan pa lang noon na Hannah Montana.
Noong una raw ay dini-discourage siya ng kanyang ama na si Mr. Artie Perez de Tagle dahil alam niyang matindi ang competition sa Hollywood, lalo na ang makapasok sa isang Disney TV show. Pero dahil sa hilig talaga ni Anna Maria ang mag-perform, itinuloy pa rin niya ang mag-audition.
Ang pinaka-exposure lang niya as a performer ay noong sumali siya sa Children's Musical Theater. Sumali rin siya sa Star Search, kung saan nakasabay niya ang American Idol runner-up na si David Archuleta.
"I always wanted to be a singer, I just love to sing. I was the very first Asian Cinderella in the Bay Area, by the way," sabi ni Anna Maria sa panayam sa kanya ng Good News Pilipinas.com.
Si Anna Maria ay apo ng sikat na comedienne-actress noong panahon ng Sampaguita Pictures at LVN Films na si Sylvia La Torre. Ang ama ni Anna Maria ay ang eldest son ni Sylvia at ang ina naman niya ay si Mrs. Evelyn Enriquez.
Sa edad na apat ay nakitaan na raw ni Sylvia ng talent sa pagkanta ang kanyang apo.
"My mother said may tono raw ang batang ‘to, and from then on, she would give voice lessons to Anna Maria whenever she could. Even during her [Sylvia] performances, she would ask Anna Maria to go up the stage and perform with her, and Anna Maria never said no," kuwento ni Daddy Artie.
Sinuwerte nga si Anna Maria nang makuha niya ang role na Ashley sa Hannah Montana laban sa libu-libong nag-audition.
Isang honor student si Anna Maria sa Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACSA or Arts High, the same school na pinasukan nina Josh Groban, Jenna Elfman, at Corbin Bleu) bago siya nakapasok sa Hannah Montana. Pero ngayon ay home-schooled na siya dahil nga sa pagsabay ng kanyang acting career.
After mapanood at mabigyan ng magandang exposure sa Hannah Montana, nabigyan si Anna Marie ng isa pang break to work with the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato sa Disney Channel original movie na Camp Rock.
Camp Rock was watched by 8.9 million viewers nang mag-premiere ito last month sa Disney Channel. Natalo nito ang viewership ng first High School Musical, na pinagbidahan nina Zac Effron at Vanessa Hudgens, na may dugong Pinoy rin.
"In Camp Rock, I play the role of Ella, a talented girl who gets bossed around by Tess Tyler [Meaghan Jette Martin] to make the life of Mitchie Torres [Lovato] miserable. In the end, Ella realizes she is her own person and does not need to be anybody's follower. I think I am breaking out of the Asian actress mold, who is usually typecast as ditzy. Disney takes good care of me," saad ni Anna Marie.
In the works na raw ang Camp Rock 2 at malamang na makasama pa rin si Anna Maria.
Bukod sa acting ay marami pa siyang kayang gawin.
"Not many people know that I sing and I write songs because I show a different side of me in Hannah Montana. But I do all these and I also design clothes," sabi niya.
Ang pinaka-inspiration ni Anna Maria sa kanyang pag-perform ay ang ipinagmamalaki ng Pilipinas na si Lea Salonga. Ayon kay Anna Maria, paborito na niya si Lea noong bata pa siya. Lahat daw ng shows at concerts ni Lea ay pinapanood niya, lalo na kung sa Los Angeles area ito nagaganap.
