Goma Cup, Richard Gomez's brainchild, is back!
After seven years, celebrity golfers will have a reunion on April 22 to 25 at Fairways and Bluewaters in Boracay. This was announced during the press conference for the 14th Goma Cup Reunion held last April 18.
The man behind this big sports event related to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) why he put it up in 1992.
"Alam mo, there was a time in the early '90s na masyadong magulo ang industry. It's very turbulent, masyadong kanya-kanya yung sistema. Sabi ko, I don't think the industry should be like this. Basta yung naging moving spirit ng Goma Cup is to unite the people from the industry, bring them together in one event, and strengthen the camaraderie through sport."
Richard promised that this year's event would be bigger than the past Goma Cup events.
"We planned this mid-year of last year," Richard narrated when asked about the preparation. "Sabi ko kay Marilen [Nuñez, of Len Plus], 'We need about eight months of preparation. You know, dahil nga malaki ito, mabusisi yung preparation na gagawin natin. And itong week na ito, it's the beginning of a new reality, the new Goma Cup."
Goma also said that the event is open to all celebrity golfers. "Ang kagandahan lang ng Goma Cup, hindi lang yung artistang galing sa isang network. The people who join the Goma Cup come from different networks—GMA-7, ABS-CBN, andTV5—iba-iba talaga," he stated.
Richard added, "I invited my all friends. Sana nga makapunta sila, in spite of the hectic schedule. Si Willie Revillame, talagang pinuntahan ko siya. Sabi niya, because everyday nga ang trabaho niya, he'll try to drop by kahit man lang one day. Sabi ko, 'Try to be there. You know, when Gome Cup started, tayo ang magkakasama.' Si Aga Muhlach, nagte-text-text kami, sabi niya, 'Basta i-book mo lang ako. Kapag walang kumpromiso that day, I'll just drop by.'"
Aside from golf, Richard and the organizers also added watersports activities for celebrities who cannot join the golf tournament. "May water events din. So, makikita din yung mga artista kung gaano kagaling ang team. It's a different side of Goma Cup," he said.
The event will be grand. "You know, sa Boracay tayo pupunta, sa Fairways and Bluewaters tayong lahat titira. Then, yung prizes doon sa tournament, malaki rin!" Richard exclaimed.
All participants will vie for an Omega watch worth P1.1 million—the Omega Constellation Double Eagle Co-Axial "Mission Hills" Numbered Edition Rose Gold in black strap. Also, a titanium Omega watch will be given away as a "hole in one" prize. In case nobody makes that feat, the watch will be raffled off at the awards night.
During the interview, the actor couldn't hide his excitement about the event.
"Kasi ang ganda ulit ng presentation," said Richard. "And I think when you take something talaga, it comes back to you, maibahahagi mo talaga sa mga kasama mo sa industriya. Ito talaga yung mga time na lagi kong ninanais mangyari sa atin."
In the end, he reiterated the main purpose of this event, "To get the people in the industry together, maging masaya at magkaroon sila ng camaraderie."
