Daniel Padilla hesitant at first to accept role in Kun Maupay Man It Panahon

Kung Maupay Man It Panahon on Daniel Padilla: "Wwe’re very lucky that we have Daniel on board not just as an actor, but as an artist. And it was wasn’t just, you know, the language that he spoke.

“He’s really perfect for the role of Miguel.

So, merong naka-standby na bumbero at binabasa sila.

“So, Daniel got the mic at nakiusap—in Waray—sa mga ekstra na parang… ‘Bakit kayo tumatawa? Anong nakakatawa?

So, sana, magtulungan tayo dito.’

“Tapos… parang nakakakilabot. Na ganoon siya as an artist. Na hindi lang basta iyong pag-arte niya ang iniisip niya, kung hindi the entirety of the project…

“So, we’re very lucky that we have Daniel on board not just as an actor, but as an artist.

“And it was wasn’t just, you know, the language that he spoke.

Charo Santos-Concio and Daniel Padilla

Magwo-world premiere ang Kun Maupay Man It Panahon (Whether the Weather is Fine) sa Concorso Cineasti del Presente (Filmmakers of the Present) section ng 74th Locarno Film Festival (Agosto 4-14, 2021) sa Switzerland.

Josabeth “Joji” Alonso at Vincent Wang.

DANIEL'S HESITATION

“It took him a while to actually accept the role,” sambit ni Direk Carlo.

“Gusto talaga namin siya. After a few days of shooting, I talked to him. I asked him, ‘What made you decide? What made you parang apprehensive at first in taking the role?’

“Tapos, parang… sabi niya, when the project was pitched to him, gustung-gusto niya. Pero ayaw niyang umoo.

“Kasi, he felt that noong ikinukuwento namin kung ano iyong pelikula about, ano iyong role niya, feeling niya, hindi siya fit to do it.

“Kasi, parang ambigat. Feeling niya, hindi siya iyong perfect person to portray the role. Natatakot siya doon.

“And eventually… actually, parang nag-aano nga kami. Parang… Sige, bigyan natin ng deadline.

“Pero syempre, nakakatakot. On our end, it was a gamble also. Parang… a popular actor, a deadline to say yes or no?

Kasi, the whole casting process, ang dami nang nawala to the point na parang we went back to zero.

“And then, after two weeks, he said yes. Tapos, ayun… as what Armi was saying, parang feeling ko, hindi lang siya portraying as an actor but also as an artist.

“Gusto niyang maintindihan at i-portray nang maayos iyong mismong role niya, and that’s what I learned during the conversation. Nirespeto ko siya as an artist.”

CHARO SANTOS AND RANS RIFOL

Pagpapatuloy ni Armi, “So, parang kami… WHAT?! Tara, mag-pitch tayo!

Ahmm, parang the universe conspired para mabuo itong ganitong casting.

“And of course, ayan si Rans na kahit… ako mismo, natakot for her. Kasi, parang … hala, si Rans, with Ma’am Charo, with Daniel.

“Pero first day pa lang, lumaban na si Rans.

"And it helped na nag-acting workshop. Ilang araw din, nag-acting workshop si Rans with Daniel. Si Angeli Bayani iyong nag-facilitate.”

FIRST MOVIE

First movie ni Rans ang Kun Maupay Man It Panahon, at napalaban agad ito ng aktingan kina Ma’am Charo at Daniel.

“Sobrang light nila katrabaho talaga. Sobrang gaan,” masayang sambit ni Rans.

“Kasi, sobrang humble talaga nila. And I never felt intimidated kahit na sobrang mga batikan na silang aktor at aktres sa industriya na ito.

“Tapos, lagi nila akong gina-guide and tinutulungan talaga nila ako. And iyong mga na-experience ko na time na naka-bonding ko rin sila, dadalhin ko talaga, sabi ko nga, kahit tumanda ako.

“Kasi, this is my first film, tapos ang makakasama mo, mga ganoon na artista. So, sobrang happy and grateful talaga ako.”

“And nakakatuwa, kasi supportive talaga sila kay Daniel.

“We’ve been working with Locarno film festival for the past three years to really make sure that our Filipino filmmakers will be visible in the many events and activities within Locarno,” pagmumuwestra ni FDCP Chair Liza.

“And of course, the films that are featured in the festival will also be showcased.

“Last year, we had a very significant year as we closed the 100th year of Philippine cinema.

“We also had a very special presentation on the Philippines during the Locarno last year, and as we close this Southeast Asian focus, eto na naman po… yet again.

“It was such an emotional moment when he won one of the top prizes in that film lab, and that started everything!” bulalas ni FDCP Chair Liza.

“He got all the stamps of approval of every single film lab that you can imagine. And now, to see thjs happening… from 2017 to 2021… it’s really surreal!

“And I’m personally humbled to have seen the journey of the film. Ahhh, so, we’re really praying that, you know, he will bring the bacon for us!”
