Back-to-back na nakatrabaho ni Direk Mac Alejandre ang magkapatid na sina Marco at Paolo Gumabao.
Kung si Marco ay nag-plaster sa My Husband, My Lover na nag-streaming noong Nobyembre 26, 2021 sa Vivamax, gaano kapangahas si Paolo na tampok sa Silip sa Apoy na mapapanood na sa Vivamax sa Enero 28, Biyernes?
“Both Paolo and Marco are daring,” lahad ng premyadong direktor sa panayam ng PEP nitong Enero 25, Martes ng hapon, via Messenger.
“I define daring as willingness to step out of one's comfort zone and embrace all that is necessary to explore the essence and soul of a character.
“Ang papel ni Paolo bilang si Alfred sa Silip sa Apoy ay very demanding. Higit sa pisikal na requirements, Paolo engages in graphic sex scenes and mano-a-mano fight sequences as required by his character as an ex convict and pimp.
“Ang psychological demands ng role ay mahirap. Niyakap lahat iyon ni Paolo nang may tapang, puso, at pananagutan.
“There were very little discussisons on the physical aspect. Mas matimbang ang creative discussions tungkol sa tunay na pagkatao ng character.
“At dahil niyakap ni Paolo si Alfred, napakahusay niya sa pelikula. He dared to embrace Alfred, and Alfred became an affecting character.”
PAOLO GUMABAO
Inilunsad si Paolo sa pelikulang Lockdown na nag-streaming noong Hulyo 23, 2021 sa iba’t ibang platform. Nasa Vivamax na rin ang Lockdown, kung saan ilang beses nag-frontal si Paolo.
“Si Paolo knows what he wants,” sabi ni Direk Mac.
“He wants to be good at his craft and is willing to learn. He comes prepared and he is open to challenges.
“Pre-prod pa lang malinaw na pinag-aralan niya ang script. At nag-alok siya ng design suggestions para sa character niya.
“Sa mga eksena ay bigay-todo siya. May isang eksena na malaki ang physical at emotional demand at he was so into it na pagkatapos ng scene ay kinapos yata siya ng hininga at nahilo siya that we had to take a break para matingnan siya ng medic.
“Buti naman na he just needed to rest.”
SID LUCERO
Sa trailer pa lang ng Silip sa Apoy, napaka-intense na ni Sid Lucero. Nakasabay ba kay Sid ang co-stars niya na relatively baguhan, kagaya nina Paolo at Angeli Khang?
“Tama ka. Intense si Sid. At sa Silip, Sid gives a beast of a performance,” pahayag ni Direk Mac.
“And so did the rest of the cast including Dexter Doria in a very important featured role.
“Ang ensemble performance ay hindi competition. Ang mahalaga ay bawat miyembro ng ensemble ay committed sa being ng kanilang role. Ang believability ng realidad na ipinakikita sa pelikula ay nakasalalay sa willingness ng ensemble ihatag ang kanilang katotohanan para mabuo ang katotohanan ng pelikula.
“Angeli and Paolo, newcomers as they are, gave inspired performances dahil they committed themselves to the role as much as Sid did.
“Maybe in a way, Sid inspired them. Sid emits such strong creative energy in his performance and that positively affects his co actors.
“But Angeli and Paolo are also at their best in the many scenes that don't include Sid.
“Mahusay sila at nagtulungan sila. Kapit kamay sila sa commitment at dedication. When you watch the film you will understand what I mean. At proud ako sa kanila.”
Naidirek ni Direk Mac before si Sid sa Kapuso primetime series na Amaya (Mayo 2011-Enero 2012).
“Isang taon yata kaming magkasama, halos four times a week, so medyo may lalim ang aming professional relationship,” salaysay ni Direk Mac.
“Mahusay si Sid noon pa man pero mas may tingkad ang husay niya ngayon. Mas may focus siya, at ang care niya sa mga katrabaho niya ay genuine.
“As he cares for his role and the film, he equally cares for his co-actors. May selflessness siya sa pag-guide sa mga kaeksena niya lalo na sa maseselang eksena. Nakakatuwa itong makita sa isang artista.”
ANGELI KHANG
Na-surprise si Direk Mac kay Angeli.
“Nakakagulat ang husay niya. Ang lawak ng range at malalim ang pinaghuhugutan. Iba ang maturity sa craft kahit newcomer,” papuri ni Direk Mac.
“Pero after each take and you see her interact with the people sa set, she is a sweet young girl. Malayo sa ikinikilos niya bilang si Emma sa Silip. Artista talaga siya.”
Bago kinunan ni Direk Mac ang sex/love scenes ng Silip sa Apoy, inilatag niya ang mga iyon sa mga artista.
“Mahalaga sa akin ang honesty, respect, at trust. Kaya nilatag ko lahat. I told them graphic ito,” paliwanag ni Direk Mac.
“Dahil sa nature ng past at present ng characters, the sex/love scenes entail graphically showing sexual positions. They agreed.
“Sabi ko, ‘Wala tayong gagawin na hindi kayo a-agree.’ So I need to know their limitations, so we could work within their limitations. We discussed.
“Si Sid, sabi niya he accepted Silip without reading the script dahil sa akin at kay Ricky Lee. Bahala na raw ako.
“Si Paolo, okey naman sa lahat ng nasa script at sa latag ko ng mga maseselang eksena. Pero may isa akong gustong ipagawa sa kanya na sabi ko very daring kaya I will understand if di niya gagawin.
“Sabi ko, pag-isipan niya. I can use a double pero sayang. Kasi, maganda kung ang mukha niya ang kita in the shot na siya talaga ang gumawa ng eksena.
“Si Angeli naman the usual limitations. Malinaw ang lahat and we agreed.
“Pagdating sa shooting, I was choreographing the first love scene nina Paolo at Angeli. Okey naman. Rehearsal for camera.
“Parang may kulang, sabi ko. I explained na realistically dapat ganito ang mangyayari. Feeling ko, mas okey yun, pero it will go a bit beyond the limitation. ‘What do you think?’ sabi ko.
“Then they said, ‘Dun tayo sa mas totoo, Direk.’ So that's what we did and the scene turned out really well.
“After that, lumapit si Angeli sa akin. Sabi niya, ‘Direk, ang ganda ng ginagawa natin. Sabihin nyo lang kung ano ang gusto ninyo at gawin natin.’
“The following day, Paolo said gagawin niya ang eksenang gusto ko. Walang double.
“That is commitment. That is trust. I am very thankful.”
Nasa cast din ng Silip sa Apoy sina Jela Cuenca, Massimo Scofield, at John Drey Guevarra.
LAST SHOOTING DAY
Last shooting day ng Silip sa Apoy noong Disyembre 7, bisperas ng kaarawan ni Direk Mac.
“Hapon pa lang, tapos na sina Angeli at Paolo, so nagpaalaman na kami,” paggunita ni Direk Mac.
“Sabi ko pa, ‘Ingat kayo at mabuti di kayo masyadong gagabihin sa daan,’ dahil nasa Pampanga kami.
“Ang last sequence ay eksena nina Jela at Massimo. Inabot kami ng midnight. Paglabas ko ng set, nandon sina Paolo at Angeli, may cake at surprise na may dekorasyon ang likod ng van, balloons, at party goodies then may pakain ang Viva para sa lahat.
“Di umuwi ang mga artista nung pack up na sila. Sabi nila, they just wanted to greet me and thank me for a wonderful film journey.
“Napasaya nila ako. Mahalaga ang makabuluhang pelikula. Mahalaga rin na malinaw sa mga katrabaho kung bakit mahalaga ang pelikula. Mahalaga rin ang relasyon sa mga katrabaho habang ginagawa ang pelikula.
“Thankful ako, Viva gives me the creative freedom. Thankful ako sa mga artistang nakatrabaho ko. Thankful ako na lately ay mga script ni Ricky Lee ang materyal ko.
“Thankful ako sa mga creative, technical, at production staff na katrabaho ko dahil sakay nila ang vision ng film at istilo ko sa work pati na ang kapraningan ko sa virus.
“Thankful ako sa opportunity na makagawa pa ng pelikula.”
BACK TO DIRECTING DARING MOVIES
Gumawa si Direk Mac ng bold movies na Sukdulan (2003, Katya Santos), Liberated (2003, Diana Zubiri, Francine Prieto), at Liberated 2 (2004, Diana Zubiri, Francine Prieto).
Pero mula noong mid-1990s, karamihan sa movies niya ay drama. Sa panahon ng pandemya, back-to-back ang mapangahas na pelikulang idinirek niya, ito ngang My Husband, My Lover at Silip sa Apoy.
Did he enjoy these daring movies? Is there a more outrageous film next, or another genre first?
"Oh yes. I always enjoy making films even when the process is difficult, especially during a pandemic, ”said Direk Mac.
“It is important that we continue to tell stories through film. It is important not to waste the opportunity to make because only a few films have been made.
“It is also important for us to be bold in the kind of stories. Being outrageous is not just about the genre but the type of story or style.
“Being bold in content and form, how to expand or explore the medium is also important.
“I hope I can say that my next films will be daring, whether it is a love story, or action or fantasy, or domestic drama or comedy. Commenting or questioning the status quo for me is part of being audacious. ”
