Lav Diaz bring pride again to the Philippines by earning another recognition in Germany.
This time, his short film Ang Araw Bago Ang Wakas won the Principal Prize at the 62nd International Short Film Festival Oberhausen.
The awards night was held last May 10 at Lichtburg Filmpalast, Oberhausen.
The 16-minute work of Lav Diaz competed against two other films: Laure Prouvost’s If It Was from France and Sally Tykka’s Retrospective from Finland.
According to International Short Film Festival Oberhausen’s website, the recipient of the Principal Prize is a work of “political urgency.”
The website also added that the film is made by an artist who is known for “works that unfold over many hours, this short film is both elaborate and succinct. Here, otherwise canonical text arrives as a pressing vernacular, a site of last resort.”
The Principal Prize comes with a cash prize of 4,000 Euros.
It can be remembered that Lav’s 8-hour film Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis won the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer prize at 66th Berlin International Film Festival held last February.
The film, which starred Piolo Pascual and John Lloyd Cruz, was screened on selected cinemas in the Philippines last March.
