Enrique Gil will veer away from his usual romantic lead image as he topbills the independent movie Dukot,
He portrays Carlos Sandoval, a young boy who offers himself to be kidnapped by a group of hold-uppers instead of his sister Cathy (portrayed by Shaina Magdayao).
"Siya yung medyo black sheep ng family, so he felt he never fit in because never siya nakasunod sa yapak ng tatay niya.
"And for that, he feels like he was never accepted kaya pinaka-close niya is yung sister niya.
"'Til nangyari nga itong incident na nakita niya yung sister niya. Yung sister niya is most likely Carlos's whole life so noong nakita niyang kukunin sa kanya, at siya yung favorite ng family, I opted na ako na lang."
Enrique's role in Dukot is very much different from the roles he usually portrays on television and movies. For this reason, the 24-year-old actor immediately agreed to do this film directed by Paul Soriano, which opens on July 13 in cinemas.
"Noong pinitch po sa akin yung movie, yung slideshow pa lang yung pinakita, first page, [sabi ko,] 'Okay po!'
"It's something different, di ba? I wanna try something new na hindi ko pa nagagawa before. It's something out from my shell. It looks fun po kasi, e.
"Siyempre, with ABS, almost all my work has been rom-com that I enjoy a lot. But sometimes, you will get to learn a lot from different things."
Because of this, the young actor shared that his rumored girlfriend Liza Soberano is very supportive of this new project, but she also envies him!
He said, "Siya rin actually naiinggit kasi she wants to do an action film so bad.
"Especially yung [lumabas ang] Darna-Darna tsismis na yan."
It has been rumored that Liza will play the much-coveted role of Darna in the movie version to be produced by Star Cinema and directed by Erik Matti.
Enrique expressed his support for her if ever she is chosen to replace Angel Locsin who begged off from doing the project because of health issues.
"Basta kung gagawin niya, I'll support her. She deserves it naman.
"Naiinggit talaga siya kasi she wanna do an action film. Maybe soon may gagawin din siya."
PREPARATION. As part of Quen's preparation for this new film, he researched extensively on the project especially since Dukot is based on real-life events.
He disclosed, "Nagresearch po ako about a lot of kidnapping that happened in the South.
"[Pero] kasi para sa akin, no matter how much you research, I read a lot, ang hirap kasi isipin, e."
There was one scene where the 24-year-old actor realized how hard it is to be a kidnap victim.
"Naalala ko, nasa set kami tapos nasa loob ako ng cell, my hands were tightened.
"Iniisip ko, ano kaya ang pinagdaanan ni real guy doon sa sitwasyon na ito?
"Ano talaga yung nasa isip niya, how did he handle everything. I only pictured what he might have done or what he might have felt. Mahirap, e. Mixed emotions yun.
"I just noticed the whole time na nakandado yung kamay mo, for one whole day, it can make you crazy! It's really hard.
"Yun pa lang, feeling ko parang masisira na ulo ko. What more yung mga nangyari sa kanya. It was so bothering, it was different, hindi mo talaga maiimagine, it’s a situation you don't want to be."
Aside from Enrique and Shaina, also part of Dukot are seasoned actors Bing Pimentel, Ricky Davao, and Christopher de Leon.
