Inamin ni Edu Manzano na nung inalok sa kanya ang role bilang Henry del Rosario sa Flower of Evil, nagdalawang-isip siya na tanggapin ang serye.
Ang Flower of Evil ay Pinoy adaption ng South Korean thriller-drama series noong 2020.
Saad niya tungkol sa usapan nila ng VIU head content partnership na si Garlic Garcia, "Actually, to be honest, I was very unsure.
"And I told Garlic from the beginning, and I said that I haven't done something like this. It felt dark for me from the very beginning.
"Ako naman, everybody knows me, yung character ko is bago. So to be able to put all these elements together, at the same time, make me feel that I was not going down to hell, na maaaring masalba ko pa rin ang sarili ko.
"That it would not be a totally bad character. Yung edge, work lang.
"But because of the support of our directors, and of course, the producers at yung tiyaga ng lahat ng mga artista, I enjoyed what I've seen so far."
Kahit beterano na sa pag-aartista, nagsilbing gabay ni Edu ang turo ng mga director na sina Darnel Joy Villaflor and Richard Ibasco Arellano.
Humuhugot din daw siya ng emosyon sa co-stars tulad nina Piolo Pascual at Paulo Avelino.
"I think all of them, lahat ng mga artistang involved, would be the first to agree na ako siguro ang pinakamaraming years in service. Ang dami ko ng nagawa na telebisyon, shows and movies for that matter.
"Minsan umaabot talaga sa technique, you know, mayroon kayong mga nakasanayan. Alam mo na more or less ang audience, kung ano ang hinahap, kung ano ang maa-appreciate at yung di na lang siguro dapat gawin.
"That's the biggest challenge for me because I had to work with some very, very gifted actor, younger than I was. But, at the same time, adaptation ng isang foreign teleserye.
"Buti na lang lahat sila naging supportive. Tinatanong ko, 'Direk, saan dadalhin ito? Direk, saan mo gusto mong matapos ang eksena?'
"Kahit papaano, we were holding each other hands para makapagpalabas ng isang maganda produkto."
Ibinase ba niya ang pag-arte sa counterpart niya sa original version ng Flower of Evil? O may sarili siyang istilo sa pag-arte?
Sagot ni Edu, "Isa yun sa kinagulat ko, dito todo, wala silang hiningi na kung ano ang pagkakakilala sa iyo, yun ang dapat.
"I went with the feel, kung ano ang feel na binigay sa akin ni Paulo o ni Piolo. It was good and consistent. It wasn't hard. We're friends.
"Ang kagandahan, nag-uusap kami. Hindi yung pagka-cut, 'O, dun ka sa dressing room mo.' Hindi, nandun pa rin kami, nag-uusap."

EVERYONE'S SERIOUS AT WORK
Marahil ay dahil sa dark theme ng series, kadalasan ay seryoso raw talaga ang vibe sa set.
"Don't misunderstand me, ha, pero itong show was scary.
"You know, the bubble for once, sabi nga, put us all in the same vicinity, same location. Magkakapit-bahay lahat kayo. You don't sleep with each other, but you own it all to the general area.
"Paggising sa umaga nandun si Paulo, roommate ko siya. Pero iba itong si Paulo, may sariling mundo ito, e. May nagko-coffee na sa labas, may nag-e-exercise pag ano mo sa bintana.
"And then all of a sudden, when you go to the set, it's not like a party. Everyone is talking about work."
Saksi raw siya kung gaano ka-dedicated ang cast at production people ng Flower of Evil.
"Before the scene, Lovi will find her own little nook and dun siya nagbabasa ng scripts.
"The demand of the artists is very high. I felt di ko madadaya ito, kahit anong puyat ko.
"Sabi ko nga, technique, di ko na kayang technique-an because nakikita ko silang lahat how hard they are working.
"Kung may magkamali sa dialogue, it was not because they did not memorize it, but because they are trying to make it better, more emotion-filled."
ON GIVING HIS ALL IN THE SERIES
Kailangan daw niya lumevel sa intensity ng mga kasama.
"I felt the pressure. Sabi ko, 'Ano ba itong mga batang ito. Sixty plus na ako, senior citizen, pinahihirapan pa ako?!" napahalakhak na biro ni Edu.
"Sana my age lang next time, isang senior citizen's movie," hirit pa niya.
Sabay seryosong turan ni Edu, "You start to respect everybody's space.
"Yung dati may mga kaunting joke, tigilan mo na yung mga joke-joke muna because si Direk Darnel, he already knew exactly kung ano ang gusto niyang mangyari sa eksena.
"That's the thing that strikes fear in the heart of the actors. Hindi rin puwedeng paikot-ikot yung direktor, ang direktor ang magpapaikot sa artista."
Kaya naman nasabi ni Edu na kahit na sikat na sikat ngayon ang K-dramas, mas bilib pa rin si Edu sa husay ng Pinoy.
"I'm a big fan of Filipino talents. I always believe that Filipinos are world class talaga.
"Regardless kung ano ang ibibigay mong istorya, I'm sure mabibigyan nila ng buhay."
