Jay-R guarantees solid performances from big time bands in his newly opened bar, Rock Candy. According to the R&B singer, this will separate his bar from the rest of the metro.
Rock Candy, which replaced Citrus Bar in Glorietta 2, was formally opened last Wednesday, February 21. This business venture is a partnership between the R&B prince and Dee Agarwal. Aside from Jay-R and Dee, other people who helped create Rock Candy include Chris Ignacio, and Ivy Tagle-Ignacio as well as the brothers Carlo and Craig Tuazon.
After the bar opening, Jay-R told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that he will be preparing for an upcoming car show this April at the Metrowalk. He says, "I have a car show coming up in April 27, 28, and 29. It's really nice. We're gonna have a lot of big-name performers."
As a prelude to that event, a mini car show took place outside the bar. Fancy cars with vertical doors were all displayed outside, perfectly complementing the party ambiance of Rock Candy.
When asked by PEP on what separates Rock Candy from the rest, Jay-R said, "We have the weekend hip hop. Pero sa weekdays, we have big-name bands. Sa March 1, we have Rivermaya playing there. Sa March 7, MYMP naman. We want big-name bands. Bihira dito sa Makati na tumutugtog yung mga Rivermaya, Bamboo, MYMP. You can find them here."
THE ROCK CANDY PROJECT. The name Rock Candy came from former MTV VJ Sarah Meier. Jay-R recounts, "Nabuo namin ni Sarah Meier, after that we sort of [did] the concept of the furniture, the colors. We started doing that after we got the name."
The bar is still undergoing more renovations. "It was really rushed because we wanted to change the whole bar na, e," adds Jay-R. To give the bar a completely new look, Jay-R and his team transformed the old sunken bar into a modern-day bar. He says, "We changed this completely. We don't want anything that reminds you of the old place, e."
He adds, "Yung deejay's booth, nilagay dito sa harap. Yung ceiling iba na. Yung buong sound system, bago na yan. Electrical, bago na."
DREAM BUSINESS. That evening, Jay-R's dream of having his own bar finally came true. "I've always wanted a bar. My partner Dee asked me if I wanted to join him, I took the opportunity right away. Siyempre medyo dream ko rin 'to, e. It took a lot of work."
As a neophyte in business, Jay-R can only hope that his enterprise will click with its clientele. "This is my first venture talaga. I'm just hoping and praying that it's gonna work. I'm praying hard na maging successful. Right now, I'm really nervous, man, and excited at the same time."
With regard to the stiff competition, he explains, "Pag may bar naman sa Makati, nagro-rotate naman yung mga tao, e. It's not bad competition, it's joining the club na lang."
As a regular barhopper, Jay-R is well aware of any potential brawls that may take place in his bar. He guarantees though, "We have top of the line security. No one's gonna get hurt." The singer himself has been involved in minor tiffs in the past. He says, "I've learned from the past already. I know how to watch myself. Medyo bago-bago dati...People get mad easily because you are a celebrity. I've learned not to look at anyone anymore."
Jay-R did not divulge on how much money he spent for the bar. He just quipped, "I'll keep it confidential (chuckles). Marami-rami din."
A-LIST GUESTS. The grand opening of Rock Candy was well attended by showbiz personalities and fellow musicians of Jay-R. Among the early birds in the event include R&B princess Kyla and her cager-boyfriend Rich Alvarez, singer Kris Lawrence and EB Babe Zida, and of course, Jay-R's non-showbiz girlfriend Myra Eliza Calove.
Alessandra de Rossi also showed her support to Jay-R. Alex (Alessandra's nickname) is Jay-R's co-host in QTV 11's MMS (My Music Station). Both Alex and Jay-R denied having romantic relationship outside of the show. When PEP asked Alex regarding issues linking her with Jay-R, she exclaimed, "No!!! Hindi totoo yan. Magka-love team lang kami dun sa show." When asked to give her message for her co-host, "Sana maging successful ka dito. ‘Wag mo kakalimutan ang MMS."
Troy Montero arrived with long-time girlfriend Aubrey Miles. Troy says of the newly opened bar, "I've been coming to this place before, for years under different names. It's nice that it's still here kicking, even though it looks different. I like it so far."
Heads turned when Cindy Kurleto arrived at the venue. Half an hour later, Pauleen Luna entered the bar, prompting Cindy to greet her with a hug. Iza Calzado and Ehra Madrigal were also there, making the room more crowded with beauties.
Jay-R's friends from the GMA-7 noontime show SOP such as Dingdong Dantes, Jaya, and former host KC Montero were also present. Other GMA-7 stars spotted by PEP included Valerie Concepcion, Margaret Wilson and Pinoy Pop Superstar's Gerald Santos. Buddies Luis Alandy and Paolo Paraiso also made it to the event.
Singers Jimmy Bondoc, Keith Martin, and Take 5 Members Hansen and Carlos did not fail to show up as well.
