Karel Marquez's mother, Pinky Marquez (inset), countered the pregnancy issue about her daughter as a malicious rumor.

Stage actress Pinky Marquez defended her daughter Karel Marquez about the pregnancy issue currently circulating around the four corners of showbizlandia.

The rumor started when the young actress-singer unexpectedly backed out of GMA-7's newest primetime show, Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan, which had its premiere episode only last Monday, September 24.

In her column published in PM yesterday, September 27, talent manager-host Lolit Solis wrote that her ward, Pauleen Luna, would take on Karel's vacated spot in the said show. According to the initial reports, Karel's decision to cut short her Zaido stint was triggered by her desire to go to the United States to study.

Upon hearing the sudden news, rumormongers quickly raised their eyebrows in unison and became highly suspicious. After all, local female celebrities who found themselves pregnant often gave this kind of excuse. The latest, of course, was Camille Prats who initially announced her departure from showbiz to study abroad, but later on admitted that she was indeed pregnant, thus prompting her to temporarily leave the country.

MOTHER KNOWS BEST. In an exclusive phone interview today, September 28, with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal), Pinky Marquez brushed off talks that Karel is planning to halt her showbiz career for an indefinite period of time.

"No. She's not leaving," Pinky firmly answered, "She just finished her Zaido taping. But she's continuing Ride to Fame." Ride to Fame is a talent search also shown on GMA-7.

According to Pinky, her daughter's decision to drop Zaido was purely because of time and health concerns.

"Even with Zaido, I was against it... The time of their taping would end at ten a.m. the next day. Her resistance is weak. She's not getting any sleep. That's when you have so much work. It's like sunud-sunod," explained Pinky.

She said, matter of fact, that Karel simply doesn't have the stamina to endure long tapings, which is a given in doing a TV series.

"She likes projects that are shorter terms, like Ride To Fame and she wants to continue her singing. Napasabak siya sa soap opera, which is good, pero ang ending naman ay very late. I don't like her going home very late."

Contrary to earlier reports, Pauleen Luna is not a replacement for Karel's character in Zaido. Pauleen will come in as Karel's sister.

Prior to Zaido, Karel was part of the GMA-7 afternoon soap opera Pati Ba Pintig ng Puso.

STAY OR LEAVE? Because of her showbiz commitments, Karel had no choice but to stop her college education. Now that she seems to be favoring having lesser workload, is Karel thinking of continuing her Marketing Management course?

Pinky replied, "Maybe. Maybe next year. I keep on asking her, ‘When is the best time to continue your college?' Kinukulit ko siya parati kasi first year college pa lang siya. Pero to study, she has to have time. How can she do that if she's very busy? If she's not getting any sleep? Even her lolo has been asking her."

The prospect of Karel flying to the U.S. to study is a plan they've already considered, even before.

"We have plans. I want her to get good education. Either this year, or maybe next year. And besides, the girl hasn't traveled in a long time. She wants to travel Europe with me," explained Pinky.

As for the heavyweight question regarding Karel's alleged pregnancy, Pinky calmly answered "No" before adding in jest, ‘Sabihin mo, ako ang buntis!"
