John Lloyd and Bea: the hit couple

John Lloyd had interesting metaphors to describe his onscreen sweetheart: “Para siyang candy, wala kang itatapon sa kanya. Lahat sa kanya mamahalin mo. She has a good heart, and a good soul. She always has pure intentions.”He also likened Bea to the sampaguita: “Kasi pag nakakaamoy ka ng sampaguita, hindi ba napaka-innocent ng amoy? ’Tapos, ’nilalagay mo sa Poon. Kumbaga, pang-altar siya. Tipong pakakasalan mo.”Quite m

"She grew up before my eyes," said John Lloyd Cruz of Bea Alonzo. "Fourteen lang yata siya noong una kaming nagkatrabaho, so nagdalaga siya sa paningin ko."

Lloydy, who turned 22 on June 24, 2005, spoke about his love-team partner during his birthday press conference in the ABS-CBN compound. The presscon was held four days before his actual birthday.

Questions about the real score between him and Bea, who turned 18 in October 2004, have often been thrown at Lloydy. At the presscon, he said with candor that a romance was not a present reality: "'Wag po nating pilitin. 'Wag nating lagyan ng pressure. Pag sinabi po naming friends kami, friends kami, at masaya at okey kami sa sitwasyong ganito."

Bea and Lloydy first worked together in the soap opera Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay. The tie-up clicked with the fans, and when the teleserye ended in November 2003, ABS-CBN immediately whipped up another soap for the new love team—It Might Be You.

In the movie My First Romance (2003), Lloydy and Bea proved that their chemistry went beyond the boob tube. Then the movie I Have You (2004) established them as one of the biggest love teams to date.

Still, Lloydy revealed that his off-screen relationship with Bea wasn't always candy-sweet: "Dati, ni hindi kami nag-uusap. Three times a week kaming magkasama, pero ni hindi ko alam ang number niya. Noong na-pair pa siya sa akin, me girlfriend ako [Ciara Sotto]. 'Tapos, may isa pa akong ka-love-team, which is Kaye Abad. 'Tapos, ako pa, e, medyo mas matanda sa kanya. So hindi ko alam na unti-unti, natatanggap din pala kami ng tao."

In May, YES! followed Lloydy from his home in Antipolo to the taping of his and Bea's latest teleserye Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin, in Sta. Mesa, Manila. We asked the two to play to the camera, and they did—without too much resistance. See for yourselves.
