"Who would have thought naman that someday, the technology of the cellphone camera could be this advanced na magagamit na rin sa pangungopya?" asks Optical Media Board Chairman Edu Manzano in connection with the use of cell phones in film piracy.

Optical Media Board (OMB) Chairman Edu Manzano has a new proposal to regulate the film piracy.

Edu, host of ABS-CBN game shows Pilipinas, Game KNB? and 1 vs. 100, is the new endorser of Unilab's HavitAll multivitamins. Pero hindi niya pinalitan si Sharon Cuneta, who is the first endorser of the said supplement, sabi ng mga taga-Unilab. The choice of Edu to also campaign for HavitAll is to show na hindi lang ito pambabae kundi panlalaki rin.

Sa presscon na ibinigay ng Star Magic for Edu and HavitAll kaninang lunch time, February 19, sa ABS-CBN compound, lumapit muna sa table namin si Edu at narinig ang usapan namin tungkol sa piracy problem.

Sa thanksgiving party kasi ng Regal Entertainment and GMA Films last Sunday, February 17, sa Imperial Palace Suites for the success of My Best Friend's Girlfriend (BFGF), napakinggan namin ang pag-uusap nina Ms. Roselle Monteverde-Teo of Regal Films and Joey Abacan of GMA Films.

May nahuli na naman daw kasi sa isang sinehan sa Cubao that day mismo na kinukopya ang pelikula gamit ang isang cell phone. Sa batas ngayon ng OMB, hindi included ang cell phone camera sa mga puwedeng magamit na ebidensya for criminal act of copying a movie.

Sabi nga ni Ms. Roselle that time, all they can do is complain.

February 14 pa lang—one day after BFGF opened in more than a hundred theaters—naglipana na raw sa Quiapo ang pirated version ng pelikula.

Naikuwento namin ito kay Edu.

"May kopya na ang opisina ko ng movie. Pangit ang kopya at malabo at galing ito sa cell phone," banggit ni Edu.

Edu's office is proposing a change in the law to include cell phone camera sa mga technologies that could be categorized as criminal accessory in piracy.

Paliwanag ni Edu, "Who would have thought naman that someday, the technology of the cell phone camera could be this advanced na magagamit na rin sa pangungopya? Sa tanggapan naman kasi namin, we couldn't do anything sa actual act, sa disc lang naman kasi kami. If it's in the CD form na, then saka mapupunta sa amin.

"Alam mo, nasa mga sinehan ang fault, e. They need to be more vigilant. Iba na ang technique ngayon, hindi lang isa ang kumukopya, two to eight na. Maghahati-hati sila ng kopya, say tigpi-fifteen minutes, ‘tapos saka nila ie-edit seamlessly.

"Kapag may nahuli, nakakalusot. Puwede kasing sabihin nila na for personal consumption lang ito, fifteen minutes nga lang. Hindi alam ng mga nanghuhuli na may kasamahan ito sa sine na magti-tape naman ng ibang parts," pahayag ng OMB Chairman.

Some upscale movie houses already practice the total banning of cell phone inside the theaters ‘tulad ng IMAX sa SM Mall of Asia, especially sa mga big premieres. Ginawa na ito during the premieres of Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix and I Am Legend.

Hindi lang alam ni Edu kung puwede itong isagawa sa lahat ng sinehan, lalo na't wala na yatang Filipino ang walang cell phone.
