Online shopping is all the rage now, and young actress Chynna Ortaleza has jumped on the bandwagon. She has reinvented herself as an entrepreneur through Stellar, her line of fashion accessories. The stylish Chynna says creating original fashion pieces comes naturally to her. Her first designs, however, were born out of accidental inspiration and a little prodding from her mom Leah.
"One time I was walking in Greenbelt," she recalls, "and I saw a really beautiful necklace, but it cost P1o,ooo. Sabi nga ng mama ko, "Wag ka ngang maging unreasonable. Alam ko, gusto mo 'yan dahil bagay sa personality mo. Pero ten thousand? Hindi makatarungan.'"
And that's how Chynna began to come up with her own designs. In November 2006, she fashioned accessories for GMA-7's Noel Bazaar. The following month, she uploaded pictures of her creations on the Multiply website (stellaroi.multiply, com) to get feedback. Her unique, funky designs were an instant hit. With a capital of P6o,ooo, which she used for beads and hardware, she made more pieces to be sold online.
"Nakita ko 'yong market ng Multiply," she says. "Feeling ko, tama siya, kasi young teens, working women, 'yong tumitingin sa site. Sabi ko nga, okey na rin 'to, kasi independent designer ka, and you're just starting out, so it's a good place to show your pieces."
Pretty soon, even her friends from showbiz and the fashion industry wanted buy items from Stellar. Chynna considers Stellar one of her greatest achievements in life, because she built this business all by herself, from the ground up. And being featured in the August 2007 issue of Entrepreneur magazine was enough to move her to tears.
"May mga tao na they come up to me; and they say I inspire them to make their own business. For a girl who didn't know anything about business, that's a great feat."
For all the blessings that have been showered on her, Chynna is giving back to the community by making and selling Give Hope necklaces. All the proceeds from these special necklaces will go to World Vision, an international organization dedicated to helping underprivileged children and communities. Through World Vision, Chynna is also sponsoring the education of two kids.
