‘90s heartthrob Matthew Mendoza doesn't mind playing father roles now

Jul 17, 2008
"I really don't mind kasi it's work and hindi ko naman kailangan nang maging mapili. I'm just happy that producers still get my services despite the fact na matagal din akong nawala," says Matthew Mendoza.

"I've been in and out naman. I do shows paminsan-minsan kapag kinukuha nila ako. Based na kasi ako sa hometown namin in Puerto Prinsesa, Palawan, and running our family business [Casa Linda, a tourist hotel] and raising my family.

"Nakakatuwang isipin na may mga taong gusto pala akong kunin to endorse their product. Maganda naman ang sinabi nila about my image. I do lead a healthy lifestyle with my family. Since I entered showbiz in 1996, never naman akong naintriga nang grabe. Wala nga akong maalala na na-link sa akin except for Charlene Gonzalez who I did movies with. Pero she was already in a relationship then, kaya hindi ako nakaporma sa kanya noon."

Matthew is now endorsing Gluta-Care Anti-Oxidant. A dietary supplement with L-Glutathione, Grape Seed extract and Vitamin C. Nagkaroon nga ng formal contract signing sa Dulcinea Restaurant, Tomas Morato, Quezon City kahapon, Wednesday, July 16.

CHECKED OUT THE PRODUCT.

"Siyempre, gusto muna namin malaman kung may mga proper papers ba sila to back up their product. Gusto rin namin ng agent ko na maging careful sa pagpili ng ie-endorse ko. Mahirap na yung madamay ako sa kapalpakan ng isang product, di ba?

"But the people behind Gluta-Care showed us documents na walang problema ang product nila. They have a seal of approval from BFAD (Bureau of Food and Drugs) and other departments na nag-i-investigate sa mga gamot ngayon. We did our own research and it was safe to endorse it."

I agreed to endrose the product. Since I'm an actor, father, husband, sportsman, and businessman all at the same time, it's important that our body is free of unwanted toxins that we get from what we eat, drink, and even the air we breath. The content of the product helps in regulating normal blood circulation and it protects our liver which is a vital organ in our body.

"I'm for a healthy lifestyle and I believe in eating the right food, drinking the right beverage and taking in the right medicines. Through that we can live longer for our family and look younger as well."

CAST IN DIYOSA. Last year, he was also in the cast of Kokey.

In Diyosa, Matt plays the Pinoy folklore character Bernardo Carpio (after whom two peaks in Montalban, Rizal, are named), who is married to Maria Sinukuan (played by Mickey Ferriols). They have a daughter played by Anne Curtis who plays the lead role in Diyosa.

"Anne will fall in love with a mortal at papasok siya sa mundo ng mga mortal. As her parents, hahanapin namin siya to bring her back sa mundo namin. Kaya we will have scenes na we will act like mortals to blend in habang hinahanap namin si Anne."

PLAYING DAD. Matt says na he doesn't mind playing father roles now. He is in his mid-30's and has three kids (two girls and one boy) under the age of 10.

"Before Diyosa, I did a two-week guest role for Daisy Siete: Prince Charming and the Seven Maids. I played there the father of Rochelle Pangilinan. Almost the same age naman yata silang dalawa ni Anne. I really don't mind kasi it's work and hindi ko naman kailangan nang maging mapili. I'm just happy that producers still get my services despite the fact na matagal din akong nawala.

"Maganda rin yung nasa isang top-rating drama show ka because people get to recognize you again. Like when I did Daisy Siete, akala ko it was just a simple afternoon drama series like the one I did for TAPE Inc. na Agawin Mo Man Ang Lahat in 2006. Pero after my first day na lumabas sa Daisy Siete, people started to know me again.

"During my two weeks as guest in the show, everywhere I go kilala na nila ako ulit. So it means na talagang napapanood ang Daisy Siete. Hopefully, ganyan din ang mangyari sa Diyosa."

During Matthew's heartthrob days in the mid-90s, he was one of the most-sought after leading men. A former Close-up boy, Matthew was in demand as a commercial model when Viva tapped him to be Charlene Gonzalez's leading man in the film Dyesebel (1996) where he played the role of Fredo.

GOOD TO BE BACK. His other films that had him as leading man include Sabado Nights: The Movie (1996, with Ina Raymundo), Ikaw Naman Ang Iiyak (1996, with Charlene Gonzalez), Nag-iisang Ikaw (1997, with Mikee Cojuangco), Bridesmaids (1997, both Ina and Charlene), Pusong Mamon (1998, with Lorna Tolentino), Nang Iniwan Mo Ako (1997, with Sharon Cuneta) and Nag-aapoy na Laman (2000, with Ara Mina). He was last seen in the indie film Inang Yaya (2006).

"Those were the days noong binata pa tayo. But now, I'm happy with my married life. I have a very good and beautiful wife and three healthy kids. I live a good and contented life in Palawan.

"Pero sometimes, the acting bug will bite you at mami-miss mo rin ulit ang lumabas sa TV at pelikula. Good for me kasi bigla na lang ako maaalala ng mga dati ko nang nakatrabaho both sa ABS-CBN 2 and GMA-7. If they have an offer, why not do it, di ba?

"My kids kasi, they want to see me act again. Natutuwa sila kapag nasa TV ako and my old movies are being shown. Ang sacrifice nga lang kapag may regular show ako, like Diyosa, I am away from them for a such a long time. Pero when I get the chance to have a long weekend break, I book a flight kaagad for Palawan to be with my family. After all, my family still comes first."
