Jake Cuenca says Santa Claus loves only the "good boys."

Pinoy kids are located somewhere near the equator, while the plump and cheery white-bearded man is from the North Pole.

In spite the distance, most of us grew up believing in Santa Claus. Our parents have reminded us to be nice (not naughty), so Santa would not forget to deliver our presents. Before Christmas Eve, children would hang their Christmas stockings (or socks), a Western tradition which dates back to 16th century, with their gift list in it.

But, of course, they would usually fall asleep and just get surprised that their wish list was replaced by goodies the following day.Even male celebrities grew up with Santa. He is a mythical figure, but he’s definitely very much alive in their hearts.

Former child star IC Mendoza told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that Santa Claus helped him discover his being gay. He was laughing when he said, "Nalaman ko dati pa na bakla ako, [hinihiling ko] mga costume ng X-men. In fairness, nabibigay naman sa akin lahat, o di ba? Mommy ko nga lang ang gumagawa. For me, Santa Claus naman is actually a saint naman, di ba? Hindi talaga siya ’yong nagbibigay. Pero naniniwala pa rin ako sa kanya."

Lipgloss star Mikee Lee said he used to ask Santa Claus to complete his set of toys. "Sinulatan ko pa ’yon, e, gagawa lang ako ng letter, ilalagay ko lang sa ilalim ng Christmas tree. Kapag binigay ni Santa Claus ang hiling ko, susulat ako sa tooth fairy para bigyan ako ng pambili ng laruan.

"I always ask for toys. Mahilig kasi ako sa mga toys, ’yong mga Batman…Kunwari, mayroon akong sets of robots, Power Rangers, I’ll ask him to complete my set."

When asked how being a Santa Claus believer affected his life, he said, "Nakakatuwa ’yong thought na may Santa Claus for kids. I mean, it’s something like God, kasi parang someone is out there looking [out] for you. I mean, if you do good, you reap great things. Di ba, sinasabi nila kapag mabait ka, may makukuha kang regalo?

"Alam mo ’yon, pagtanda natin, madadala natin ’yon sa isip natin na kapag gumawa tayo ng mabuti, may regalo tayo sa sarili nating buhay. Hindi naman necessarily material, pero parang pakikitungo na lang natin sa ibang tao."

Like Mikee, Bench model Carlo Guevara also wished for toys when he was still a kid. "Talagang ako ’yong type na nililista ko pa [ang wishes] sa papel na nilalagay ko sa socks sa bahay namin. Pero noong nagsusulat ako dati, talagang kapag umaalis kami, halimbawa magsisimba kami, pagkabalik ko, nandoon na ’yong regalo na sinulat ko."

Does he still believe in Santa?"Medyo noong tumanda na ako, parang nawala na. Simula noon, sumunod na Pasko wala na naman, tinanong ko na ang dad ko. ’Yon pala, daddy ko ang naglalagay ng regalo."

Jake Cuenca was a believer in the "naughty or nice" idea."I think, for me, Santa Claus is really for the good boys," he said, laughing. "Kaya hindi ako binibigyan ni Santa Claus ng regalo noong bata ako."

But if he is going to wish something this year, the Kapamilya actor said, "Siguro ngayon, kung mayroon man akong hihilingin kay Santa Claus, sana mas madalas kong makasama ang pamilya ko."

Kapitan Boom star Jon Avila defied the myth that Santa Claus is male—his mom is Santa. He explained, "I believe everyone has a Santa Claus inside of them. ’Tapos feeling ko, when my mom comes to the Philippines, parang siya ’yong Santa Claus sa family namin, e, because she gives a lot to everyone."Unlike the other boys, the former Pinoy Big Brother housemate used to have a simple wish list—just candies. "I stopped when I was ten years old. I just got older. I still believe that Santa Claus is there, but I got older, e."

DJ Rico Robles has a similar view about Santa Claus. "You know, Santa Claus is in our hearts. So, the Christmas Season is the season for giving. But if you could really do it 365 days in a year, it’ll be greater than meeting Santa Claus himself. Deep inside your heart, there’s a Santa Claus there, and all you gotta do is get in touch to that."

StarStruck alumnus Mart Escudero, on the other hand, said he does not believe in Santa Claus. He told PEP: "Noong bata ako, hindi na talaga ako naniniwala, kasi napapanood ko sa TV na parang Tatay yung naglalagay ng regalo."But he doesn’t discourage his young sibling from believing in Santa, "kasi masaya naman."

Santa Claus never grows old and fades away. As our celebrities say, he's in everyone who's young at heart.
