ABS-CBN supports massive rehabilitation campaign for Pasig River

The Kapamilya Network extends its support to ABS-CBN Foundation's, latest and perhaps biggest endeavor to date—the rehabilitation of the polluted Pasig River. The advocacy titled Kapit Bisig Sa Ilog Pasig aims to bring back life to the Pasig River in seven years.

ABS-CBN commits its to support the "Kapit Bisig sa Ilog Pasig" clean-up campaign—a massive, ambitious project which aims to rehabilitate and restore life to the heavily-polluted river.

The crusade is spearheaded by ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. managing director Regina Paz "Gina" Lopez in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC), together with the seven local government units and the Department of Science and Technology.

At the press launch conducted earlier today, February 24, at the Makati Park and Garden in Makati City, Gina Lopez—who is also the brain behind Bantay Bata 163, Bantay Kalikasan and Bayan Foundation—expressed confidence that unlike past efforts, this new campaign is more focused with a clear idea of what it aims to accomplish in seven years time.

The press conference took note that though several initiatives were carried out way before, these projects failed because of an inefficient monitoring system, lack of funding support, red tape, and the general mindset that reviving the river is unworkable.

"Kapit Bisig sa Ilog Pasig"is determined to eliminate the drawbacks through a more systematic strategy using both conventional and modern methods which would help immensely in reviving the river. But then, of course, the noble project needs full cooperation from the public.

Acknowledged as the country's foremost river system, the Pasig River links the country's biggest inland body of water, the Laguna Bay, with the country's principal bay, Manila Bay. The Pasig River system includes four major rivers and 43 minor tributaries. It is a unique ecosystem affecting a highly urbanized and industrialized area of 570 sq. km. covering nine cities and one municipality of Taguig, Pateros, Pasig, Marikina, Mandaluyong, Makati, Pasay, San Juan, Quezon, and Manila. The main river is around 27 kilometers long, 50 meters at its widest, and four meters deep at its shallowest.

COVERING ALL BASES. ABS-CBN top honcho, Gabby Lopez III, likewise announced the network's support to the project by pledging to commit media outlets at his company's disposal, particularly radio and television.

"This is a project we're very excited about," said Mr. Lopez. The network executive proudly highlighted his sister's success in improving the area surrounding the La Mesa Watershed in Quezon City, which would also serve as the model blueprint for Pasig's rehabilitation.

Mr. Lopez revealed that ABS-CBN shows will feature and promote the advocacy. Celebrities under the network's stable of talents will also participate in the campaign by encouraging the public to do their share by whatever means possible.
