Senator Loren Legarda (main) reacts strongly to the statement of Alec Baldwin (inset), who starred in Hollywood movies Working Girl, Great Balls of Fire, to name a few, in the Late Show with David Letterman last May 12 about Filipino women.

"I think about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point, or a Russian one, I don't care...I'm 51," sabi ni Baldwin kay Letterman.

Banat ng broadcaster turned senator, "Isn't it that when you order something, you pay for it? Thus, I say to them, Filipino women are not for sale, not even to Hollywood actors [like Baldwin].

"The practice of taking mail-order brides, aside from being illegal in the Philippines, is just one step removed from prostitution. Women in general should not be treated as commodities, to be ordered like fast food, or a pair of jeans to be discarded at the whim of the buyer. I condemn all forms of commoditization and objectification of women."
